It amazes me that university /college student who are intelligent enought to get into uni/college cannot grasp or do not any research on the government taking money from their wages. Why and what for.

I know people who sit at mind boggling/soul destroying jobs but they know exactly how much tax they will pay, and why, how much NI they pay.
Its not rocket science - do some research, its your money that is being taken from you, do you not want to know why.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

A few quid in tax and NIC is important to most of us but compared to the level of student debt....
A bit of patience won't hurt any of us.

I greatly appreciate your many very knowledgeable and often compassionate posts so... ...

but we can possibility expect some small measure of accuracy and some willingness to answer simple quastions

his/her first post said that they paid 205 while others paid 170

his/hers last said 203.50 and everyone else 178.
not a lot but ...tax/Ni is all about detail

    but adding to fengirl post

    note that

    203.78/11% = 1850 (11% is 'normal' NI rate)

and 1850 x 9.4% = 174 .. (9.4% is contracted out of second state pension ) rate ... of course there are some other adjustments .
  • I am Sorry CLAPTON that you are getting annoyed. I am working so its hard to post but have managed to spare a few mins to sneak away

Let me be more precise -
as regards to the tax going up and up... first month which was augusts pay ( i started in august) i had approx 2300 earnings and 203.50 in NI and then superannuation. 0 tax

then on the following months i have had the same NI (203.50) but increasing amounts of tax thus reducing the amount of take home pay (net pay). My gross has stayed the same. I read up (to all the ppl who say that i havent tried) and i realise this is because the first X amount is tax free and its averaged out over the rest of the monthly payments.

Im not getting any beniefits from my employer as such but i am in training doing a vocational course so im partially a student if that counts.

With regards to my colleagues. I think the error seems to be in my NI. This is because they get the same gross pay as me. Same Taxed amount. Same superannuation. I'm consistently paying 49 pounds ish more then them thus my net pay is always 49 pounds less.

Going to follow the link above to try and get someone to have a look at my NI.

Thanx for you help and sorry to infuriate certain members

If you look at post #11, then having confirmed that you (and your colleagues) are getting paid around 2,300 then it sounds liek you are paying the RIGHT amount of NI and it's your collegaues that are paying too little.

Assuming that you are not in a contracted out pension scheme then NI on 2300 a month would be just over £200, as you described it as aprox 2300 I assume it is a bit more than this so your NI looks correct. If you are in a contracted out pension scheme then you are being deducted the wrong NI. Are your friends in a contracted out pension?

  • Your NI seems to be correct for a normal worker.

    Gross pay £2,300 less primary threshold amount £476 = £1,824 @ 11% = £200.64 NI.

If you had a period of time before starting this employment when you were not earning or earned very little or was on benefits like JSA then you will have had some unused personal allowances. These will have been used up in your first wage resulting in no tax or very little tax. The next wage would then be taxed as normal.
  • cool, thanx guys, i just showed the thread to my boss. He's kindly drafted a letter and going to get it sorted out for me!!!
Guess thats the pressure of MSE. Think when he read all the technical jargon he understood it and figured out i was paying a bit too much.
    thanks again!
