Query for the knowledgable types that reside here!
I have an '05 plate, 2.0L petrol Laguna. Last March the battery died so I replaced it, thinking 4 years for a battery 'aint too bad.
Last week the new battery failed, the place where I bought the battery reluctantly replaced it under warranty as the original had totally lost it's capacity to hold a charge.
On connecting the new battery, I noticed a spark when I connected one of the grounds so I whipped out my multimeter and noticed a constant draw of current on one of the -ve's. There are 2 -ve's connected to the battery pole, 1 grounds the car, the 2nd, with a 0.5amp draw, runs down to the bottom of the engine block. It is a thick cable and is paired with a thick cable from the +ve terminal.
What would these cables be for, is it the starter/solenoid or something else. They completely bypass the fuse box as I had pondered pulling fuses to see what could be drawing a charge from the battery.
Something I will test when it is light, is to put my meter back in series on the thick cable and close the bonnet/lock the car to see if the current draw ceases after a period of time, as I've read here that some modern cars shut down gradually after you press the 'lock' button on the remote.
If there is a constant load, does anyone have a rough idea what it may be, by my calculations the battery will collapse within a few days at this rate!

It will always draw something, alarm sensors, radio code storage etc. This is why you have to re-enter your Stereo PIN Code after you have disconnected the battery.0

Some ECUs will also draw power. More likely to be radio, clock, alarm, central locking from plipper etc.The man without a signature.0
