Hi Vicky
Just to warn you this place and overpaying are addictive, I love my MF diary, at times it keeps me in order, other times I use it to confess to my sins!! I try to post most days as I am obsessed but also get the feeling of cold turkey when I don't:eek::rotfl:
Loads of people on here are really helpful, just watch out for the spread sheet two (gallyGirl and Stuart) before you know it your computer will be full of the things:D. Don't let on but i've never really got to grips with the spreadsheets myself, I check things by reading back in my diary and my hand written savings totty!!:o
Buying your first house is so exciting, you are lucky to be able to spend time at your [STRIKE]out[/STRIKE] in laws whislt having big work done, its so much nicer to be able to go back to a clean bath and bed at the end of the night, I have often thought if we took on a renavation I would buy a caravan and live in the garden:rolleyes:
Good luck on your quest.

Thanks all. We've got some tradesmen coming round to quote next week for various bits and pieces (new boiler/central heating/power sockets - there's ONE in the master bedroom
) in the house and father-in-law has been there today taking down curtain rails and stripping the one room that has wallpaper. Oh and measuring up for the loft insulation.
We need to find a gas fire supplier (one of those that looks like a tv screen in the wall, if you know what I mean) and then we'll get the brick wall surround plastered over. It all seems like a logistical nightmare at the moment and I'm trying to get my head around it all.
On the overpayment front, we're going to be bumping up our payments to a nice round figure, which will mean that we will definitely overpay by £15 odd a month. Not amazing, but it means that it will look tidy on our statements :rotfl:.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0 -
On the which website they recommend the bosch ( wostester ) boilers and a new central heating system will add value and cut your heating bills with loft insulation.
Consider more plugs rather than less !
Eight in the main bedroom and six in other rooms. Double sockets
I know this sounds alot but you will need them.
You may also need a new RCB circuit board Not cheap
Good Luck0 -
Oh, I'm just sooooo embarassed that I haven't posted on here for sooo long
. We stayed with the in-laws for 3 months and moved in at the beginning of March 2010. My birthday is in mid-March and I REFUSED to still be with them, even if the house was only a shell, on my birthday. They were VERY good and despite us trying to give them money (ie physical cash, not just waving our cheque book half heartedly), they decided that we needed every penny for paint, new internal doors etc etc. Very generous indeed. Father-in-law would come round and paint on most days when we were at work and in the evenings we'd be round doing the next bit - after the new boiler (Baxi, by the way) had been installed.
We're overpaying by £100 per month now. I "realised" that we had an extra £50 pcm in our joint account after all spending, so that went onto the mortgage. Then I got a payrise and so I felt that another £50 could go onto the mortgage (the rest was for savings/dentist etc). Ok, so the mortgage won't be paid off just QUITE yet, but it feels good to actually own another part of a brick than we would have done initially!
We would pay off more, but I bought a new car so I've got finance on that. My previous car was just beginning to get expensive, so we decided to get rid of it. Maybe it's a little extravagant BUT it WAS a good deal (and if my Yorkshireman of a husband says that, then it must be as he's obsessed with checking cars and their deals!).Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0 -
That's quite a gap in your diary Vicky but good to see you here! Well done on your OP's of £100 a month. This is the minimum I make as these are the savings from reducing DD's etc.
Will you be staying now?June 2025 - part 1 - £19,145 part 2 - £21,973 Total - £41,118 29 months to go!0 -

Stranger!
Welcome back. Sounds like all is going well. Stuff always costs a fortune at first, but once the house is as you want and you get more pay rises it will all get sorted.
Nice to 'see' you.0
