Faulty Item and returns

Hi
I brought an item from whom I assume is a trader on ebay. I come to that conclusion as I wanted 2 of them they only had 1 so it was no use, they then contacted me to say they had 2 so I made the purchase.
On receiving the goods one of the items does not work so as I wanted 2 I now don't want either including the working item.
I have requested a refund which I suspect will be OK as the seller has reasonable feedback however, the postage was £9 and the 2 items only £15.
My question is - Am I entitled to the cost of the postage and the cost of me posting the item back to the seller or will this end up with it costing me £18 and getting nothing, in which case I may as well just cut my losses
Thanks.

It depends on the seller as some sellers with just refund you the price you paid for the item and some with also include the postage costs but some sellers won't give you the money that it will cost you to send it back
You could open a dispute via ebay as "item not as described" if you don't hear anything back from the seller0 -
Never assume someone is a trader just because they have two of something. The faulty item should be full refunded by the seller, ie item cost and original p and p but not return p and p. The good item does not need to be refunded.
If the seller does not offer a refund on the faulty item voluntarily then assuming you paid by paypal you can do a chargeback for broken or damaged item. If you win that you will still have to return the faulty item at your own cost but will get the full original cost back for that one item. If you didn't pay by paypal then you will have to do an ebay claim which costs £15 and does not get your original p and p back ( a two tier system and why I always use paypal), so this is unlikely to be any good for you.
Talk to your seller first and see what they say, most sellers are reasonable people and will try and help.
