car insurance for 18 yr old lad in a bmw ?.. any ideas/recommendations

18 yr old son with 16 months experience .. needs fully comp on a bmw 318ci coupe , 6 yrs old value £10k.

putting the mother & father on as well to help keep premium down.

Checked the first handful of best websites ... and best deal from Norwich Union at about £2450 !!!.. AAARRRGGGGHHHHH !!

In fairness we know first year for young lads is very dear , but does anyone have any knowledge or experience of any other insurers worth checking out ??

thanks,

May be it would be better to put him as a named driver for BMW and buy some old banger to insure it and get no claims? I am a young driver myself and afraid there is no way to get cheap insurance at that age on any car. However, insurance for 1.0 Metro Rover would be much cheaper and if he does not drive it he would definitely built no claims. That is just a suggestion though. Never heard of anyone buying a car just for no claims but think it could be much cheaper for those wanting to insure sports cars later.

If he really wants the BMW then Elephant Insurance or eCarinsurance are certainly worth trying although it may be a too high group car for even them.

The main driver of the vehicle has to be the policyholder and any named drivers must intend to drive the vehicle at some time. Intentionally falsifying these details to try and lower the premium would be considered fraud and result in both your policy being voided and a first party fraud loading being put on CIFAS which your bank/ credit card/ mortgage company etc would all be made aware of.

Given the vehicle I dont think £2500 is that bad a price - just isnt a sensible vehicle for them to have.

I've got to agree here, the premium is so high because of the risk - is it really a good idea for such an inexperienced driver to have such a powerful vehicle?

I agree with the majority of others above, in that insuring an 18 year old on a £10k high powered car is just asking for trouble, the risk is huge, hence why the premiums are so high!. Also with young drivers a few penalty points and its goodbye licence, and afterwards he'd probably be lucky to get insurance on anything.

No offence to your lad, its possible he may be the safest, most careful driver around, but a powerful car and relative inexperience can lead to mistakes which then lead to accidents, as can having a load of mates in the same car egging him on to "see what it can do". - it happens.

Remove all temptation!, get him a car which has group 1 insurance, and wouldn't do more than 75mph if you pushed it off a cliff! - at least until he's 21.

Besides part of the fun of being 17 / 18 is buying a cheapie and doing it up :D and a £1000+ saved this year on insurance will buy him a nice CD Player and Sat Nav! and whatever other extras he wants.

Also agree...insurance price seems fair considering his age and the vehicle in question.

just for info,.... after spending 5 hours checking everyone /everywhere !! ..
with a £1000 excess ... RAC came out cheapest at £2121.

happy with high excess on both kids' policies .. i wouldn't claim for anything that was a few hundred quid.

next best NU at £2450 ..(they now own RAC!) .. presumably they're having a push on rac ?

most quotes well over £3k .. and over £4k !

Couple of "specialist companies" said i wouldn't crack £3k.

then went on to organise breakdown cover .. never knew it was dependant on driver/ insurance etc ! .

NU breakdown quoted £87 for recovery plus best package but i 've gone with Green Flag at £89.. but less £20 quidco.

    folks...its a 318! you make its sound like a 911.

back on topic.....if he wants cheap insurance buy a car that no one will want to nick and he's not likley to crash. i'm 32 and cant even remember what car i had at 18 so whatever stupid amount i spent insuring it was a waste! (it would have been a whole lot faster than a 318 though ;))
