MOT failure on Escort 1996.
Hiya. My beloved car failed its MOT today on the following:
Front (pipe) exhaust has major leak of exhaust gases.
Offside rear parking brake recording little or no effort.
Parking brake efficiency below requirements.
I'm a so called typical woman and don't understand any of this. Can anyone help. How bad is this? How much am I looking at to have this fixed? Any replies greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Looks like a new exhaust and an adjustment to the handbrake, so doesn't sound terminal to me, but I'm sure a man will come along and explain it properly"Keep your dreams as clean as silver..." John Stewart (1939-2008)0

Sounds like a £70ish exhaust job and as said either new or change to the handbrake or possibly new drums/brake components at worse
Certainly unlikely to be overly expensive or terminal if otherwise car in good working order0 -

Sounds like an incredibly cheap (£120-£150) MOT for a 13 year old scort. If you like the car, get it done and be happy for another year.0

have you asked the garage for a quote?
brakes should be fixable by just putting new shoes on,
exhaust 'could' possibly be fixed depending where the leak is
rear shoes apx £20
front pipe apx £25
plus 2-3 hours labourI MOJACAR0 -
Ask the garage for a quote, maybe consider going to another garage for a quote if your not sure.
Its all fixable issues, there not really expensive items + theres one that will last. xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
he means can you not hear the exhaust blowing ie the car sounding like a tank
certainly a good mot that
nothing really to worry about
exhaust front pipe around £40ish
shoes about £15
then 2 hours labour maxSealed pot challenger # 10

That sounds closer to the price
The exhaust consists of the front downpipe, the cat (which is often part of the downpipe), the centre section and the rear section. The centre & rear sections would have been one piece when new.
It's rare that the front downpipe fails ... and as it often comes complete with cat. would be expensive.
The centre & rear sections are the parts that usually fail, and it's the centre section that is often referred to as the front section of the exhaust as it contains the front silencer.
Cost for that would be about £70 fitted.
However, I would suggest if the centre section is replaced, careful consideration is given to replacing the rear box at the same time. That'll cost about the same again.
Rear parking brake failure could be just adjustment/release, but more likely worn or contaminated shoes.
Shoes are normally contaminated by leaking brake cylinders.
So possibly £150 for new exhaust
£50 -£100 for brakes (dependant on what parts, if any, are required)
£50 for re-mot.
£300 total approximately (plus the £50 you've already paid for the mot failure)"Now to trolling as a concept. ....
