Hi, we are trying really hard to reduce our energgy consumption and am doing weekly readings on the gas and electricity, and asking BG to rebill us over the phone, that way I can keep an acurate track. I gave my last readings on the 9th and again today and we have used:
GAS - £21.12
ELECTRIC - £15.46
2 adult males living in a 4 bed end of terrace, not much loft insulation, 90% double glazed. House occupied for about 7 hours a day when we're both at work, 24 hours sometimes twice a week when we're not. Gas central heating set between 15 and 20 degrees on timer mostly on work days to come on for approx 6 hours a day, sometimes set on constant on days off. Condensing tumble dryer used twice a week for about 4 hours total, all energy saving bulbs, just one lamp and one ceiling light used in evenings normally, cooking done on a gas hob for about 2 hours a week, and a halogen oven for about 3 hours a week, 1 fridge and freezer on 24/7, washing machine used on quickwash on a 30 degree cycle total of about 4 hours a week, breadmaker used for 8 hours a week, pc on 24/7 but on sleep mode most of time (housemates and he refuses to turn it off), sky box, router and cable modem on 24/7, plasma TV used for about 7 hours a day, a halogen heater used on high for about an hour (housemates room, no heating in it), electric shower used for about 2 hours a week in total.
I know it depends on so many variables but based on other people's domestic circumstances would you say our consumption is ok?

Your consumption is high but that's what you choose to use. If you want to use less, use less. If you're happy paying for your comfort, pay for it.
As your consumption is high, on the comparison sites you should also check single fuel suppliers - your high electric useage can yield bargains.
I am not quite sure what you are asking. If you are heating all four bedrooms and have a telly etc on all day then you have to pay for it. Use your consumption in kWhs to work with - not the cost.0 -
Your property is very similar to my own, in build and efficiency measures, and we are on the cheapest tarriff for us atm. Out last quarters bill was £160.00 for electrcity and £40.00 for gas. The electricty is more or less than same just a small variation. The gas is different as we're stingy gits and would rather snuggle under a blanket than put the gas on. Its not cold enough yet for regular heating.
So in answer of your question its more or less fine. Of course things can be done to improve the situation but tis not excessively high.0 -
cheers mynewt, thats just what I was wondering, if anyone has a similar pattern of usage who can say if we're paying too much. I know we're high users but I want to be comfortable and I skimp on other things so need me luxuries when I can!

The tumble dryer will cost a lot, more effcient to buy a clothes rack and position next to a radiator to dry over a period of time. I also hang clothes on radiators to dry in the winter instead of using the tumble dryer. Gas is about 1/3 the price of elecy and if like me your tumble dryer is in the kitchen or utility room then having it on is heating a room you are not in.
Also I reduced my elecy by about 25% by turning of the PC that I had on 24/7. To convince your mate I would measure your elecy by recording it for 7 days take daily readings. Then for the enxt week turn of the PC when not in use and take daily readings. I think you will be surprised at how much elecy it uses in "Sleep" mode. Then if your mate wants it on 24/7 I would say that he should pay the extra elecy himself.0
