Now have 2 chicks - one black, one yellow. Still drying out, and exhausted, so not yet cute and fluffy.

DH and DS have terrible dilemma. Keep running upstairs to look in incubator, then rushing down again for the footie. Will keep them fit.

Bargain addict - how many hours between the first duck hatching and the last? All our buff orpingtons are showing signs of hatching. No sign from the light sussex eggs. Maybe le coq wasn't up to his task!

  • Hi PP, sorry, been away from computer (hubbys birthday). We had about 24 hours from first hatch to last. Sadly we have another little one who isn't well. Think it might have a bad leg. She is siting on dd lap at the mo. the rest are running around the pen like crazy but we are having to separate them from dad because he keeps pecking them, especially the all black we have.

They had their wings clipped day before yesterday to stop them flying. If you do it within a few days of hatching they have no nerves so it doesnt hurt them.
  • Photos on tonight guys:D

Thanks BA. Happy birthday dear hubby, happy birthday to you!

Can't wait to see your pics.

Sorry to hear about your duckling. Our first chick is out of the incubator, but not able to stand well yet, unlike the second to hatch, who was about an hour later out of the egg, and is very sprightly. Chick 1 very gangly. DH worried that her leg may be a bit dodgy. She's eaten, though, so we'll see.

Anyone got any ideas for names for these chicks. Our hens are Rapunzel, Aurora and Cinderella. Great fun calling them in at night.

DD favours Cyril pour le coq, Windy Miller, Compost and Eco Chick.

DS prefers David, Frank, Peter and Steven, in honour of our soon to be victorious (he hopes) brave boys.

  • Sorry guys, cant find lead for blooming camera now.

We lost our 2nd little one this afternoon. Its so sad and dd is really upset so we haven't really had the time to look for the lead.

Anyway the other 8 are all very good on the pond. hubby built a little ramp for them to jump in and out. The yellow ones are changing to white on their tails. The black one is still being pecked by dad. If it doesn't stop in a few days we will have to give him to the breeder and we will keep 2 of the babies. The breeder said we should have 1 male and as many females as poss to 'keep him happy'.

They make the cutest chirping sound, quite loud for such little things. They also found a gap in their bit of the pen to get out, and 5 of them escaped. They are really fast so me, hubby and dd haad to catch them!
  • PP we have names like Betty, Dot (cos she had a black dot on her back) splodge, Adam (as in Ant) cos he has a black stripe across his face.
  • Right, we've found the lead, got the photos onto the computer but we can't get them onto here. Can any clever people out there tell us what to do?

Register on Photobox .... then follow the instructions from "start here" on the home page. Set up a "Ducks" album and make sure you make it public. Put the photos on there and then post a link to it here :)

You can then share that album with anyone you like, simply by sending them a link :)

Morning all. Bit of a sleepless night. We now have 4 chicks in their temporary home, an apple box from the supermarket in the spare room. 3 are typical yellow chick you see in all Dorling Kindersley picture books. They're getting stronger and walking around a bit unsteadily. The other is black and fluffy, but seems unable to stand. DH thinks she might have a problem with her pelvis - she seems more splayed out than the others, and try as she might, she can't get her legs underneath her to raise her up. She's sitting up though, and pecking at crumb. Everything crossed here. She's lovely, and so cute.

Thanks for this, DFC. Can you tell me, when you've pasted the link, rather than the "http\......." that I would put in, you have "Photobox... " as the link. This looks far more elegant and professional. How's it done?

We have photos, and will post later.
