    Afternoon all. :hello:
I'm glad it's not just me, we are being given the house for FREE - 3 bed in a really nice area in the current state it's worth £65k but one on the estate sold for £180k which was the same size so done up it could be worth a LOT more.

He wants it all done now, no compromise. He always like the house when his Grandma was alive so don't want to say we're not having it but it's causing so many arguments that I just wish it would all just go away.

We're going to Florida next month, which has been booked for a YEAR then he wants to have everything done before we move in then move in SIX WEEKS after we come back from holiday!

Can you see why I am so stressed??????
    Hi PMS

Just to add a different perspective :o if it was me, I'd choose to do up the house too. Most people who have their own house, are committed to very large mortgages for 25 years, you're in the lucky position of acquiring a house with no mortgage (albeit through sad circumstances :() so would a compromise of a small mortgage (re-mortgage rather than loan) over a short period of time suit you both? If he compromised a little on the price of the new kitchen etc, you could possibly get the cost of the mortgage down to £150/£200 a month which would be a lot less than you currently pay in rent and in 5 or 10 years time, you could be totally debt-free and have a house worth twice as much as if you'd done no work. You'd have also had the pleasure of living in a new, modern house all that time, paying less than you currently do in rent, without the constant stress of trying to save every penny to put towards the modernisation.

    Just a thought. :o

Trying to rush it all through does seem to be adding extra stress to it all though.

Give him my phone number and I'll give him my full horror story:eek::rotfl:.

Seeing as you are not paying mortgage or rent, it wouldn't take long to save up enough to redo a bathroom or whatever project you set yourselves first.

Yes it is nice to have everything done all at once all new, but not at the cost of a relationship. It nearly did us and has really put life into prospective.

Good thanks Katie. :) We're VERY busy at the moment, that's why I haven't had much chance to post.

So glad to hear all's going well with your boyfriend, hop he feels better soon.

  • Thanks everyone, we live in a very cramped tiny 2 bedroomed council house at the moment so would be ideal to move into a lovely spacious 3 bedroomed house so the girls can have there own rooms & I do like the house but I guess with the holiday as well it's all too much for me at once.

The house will be in 3 names on the deeds - both of ours & MIL, the house was left to MIL but as she owns (mortgage free) her own house she's said she doesn't want this one BUT if at any point we decide to sell it she wants half the money - the will names her solely for the estate & everything so she's giving to us now for us to choose what we want to do. So if we were to do it up, sell it, pay off the loan & buy somewhere else we'd only get half from the sale.

From DH's point he doesn't want to paying off a loan & paying rent on this one - which we can't afford - so wants to move in as quickly as possible once the work is done.

I have seen people/couples relationship destroyed because of debt which is why I vowed I would never get myself into a situation like that but I really don't know what to do.
