It seems we're moving into his Grandma's house in a few months only it needs a lot of work on it so DH's magic answer is to get a loan - which I am NOT happy about - which was going to be £20k now it's creeping further to £30k. I have told him time & again why not just do the essentials (central heating, carpets, redecorating & rewiring) but no he wants the WHOLE house doing how he wants including a new kitchen, new bathroom, new doors & windows. We had a quote from one company to do everything he wants (not carpets & new furniture) will be £23k, the kitchen part was £5,200 so today we've been to another company's showroom where the kitchen he likes from them is £5,360 in the SALE & if we pay cash we can have it at that price otherwise if we wait til we want it doing it will be an extra £3k! The kitchen in the house is 35 years old but it's perfectly ok to use, there is little wrong with it so why spend money we don't have/don't need to do? Is it just me? He says getting a big loan will be ok as long as the payments are less than we are paying now in rent but it would be nice to be able to move & not have to pay £300 a month out like we do now! We're going back to the house on Friday so he can have lots of other companies in to give seperate quotes, I really don't understand why he's being like this. I've never had a credit card cos I hate the thought of owing people money so the thought of owing someone £30k is totally freaking me out tbh!

I can totally understand why is freaking you out - i would be too. Is there any way that he would compromise - and do the work gradually rather than in one go - do it little by little as and when you can afford it? xxxx

    Debt-free and Proud!
P.S Found this comp earlier, anyone want to enter for me?

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2279517

Now that would cheer me up a little if I could win the print!

    Done:D

and from your other post, I can totally relate to where you are coming from with regards to taking out a loan to do up house. We did that with our last place and to cut a long story short ended up in debt with over £30,000 to pay off (see sig) we are nearly there tho after a 7 year debt free slog and a horrendous not a penny to spare budget:rotfl:.

We had to sell our perfect home to pay off the debts and this house needs a lot doing to it but now it has to wait until we have saved up for it. Means so much more when you have saved for something you appreciate it more. Just my thoughts.
    :j DEBT FREE FROM 01/01/11 :j

  • I'm glad it's not just me, we are being given the house for FREE - 3 bed in a really nice area in the current state it's worth £65k but one on the estate sold for £180k which was the same size so done up it could be worth a LOT more.

He wants it all done now, no compromise. He always like the house when his Grandma was alive so don't want to say we're not having it but it's causing so many arguments that I just wish it would all just go away.

We're going to Florida next month, which has been booked for a YEAR then he wants to have everything done before we move in then move in SIX WEEKS after we come back from holiday!

Can you see why I am so stressed??????

Aw hun i can deffo see why you are so stressed - i really don't know what to say - other than trying to get him to compromise. Is there anyway you can try and get him to delay making any rash choices? It is both of you that would be involved in the loan - not just him. I can understand he is confused etc over his loss - but he needs to take your needs and thoughts into account too. In an ideal world you'd get a loan get all the work done and sell at a profit and be able to to repay the loan that way - but it isn't always so easy (which i am sure is another reason why you are so stressed).

Sorry i can't be more help xxxx
