From Virgin to BT

Our home phone provider has been virgin media for about 4 years. We have had a dispute over charges with virgin, which we finally sorted, but we don't want to use them again. Anyway i'm switching back to BT and was wondering does that mean i need a new bt line? I don't know how this sort of thing works and thought i already had an existing line.

And if i do need a new line is there any way to get the fee waived on the basic plan as i dont really want to pay for anytime.

It depends. Are you on Virgin Media cable or Virgin Media national?

If the former, you'll need a new BT line (free installation is available at the moment if you agree to an 18 month contract and to making at least 10 chargeable or inclusive calls via BT each month). If you opt for the basic calling plan (the Unlimited Weekend Plan - inclusive calls of up to 60 minutes each to 01, 02, 03, 0845 and 0870 numbers at weekends) there is no monthly charge for that.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

If you are useing a cable modem & tv,phone then the reason you need a new line from BT,is that VM Cable phonelines work in an entirely different way than PSTN (BT/Talk Talk ect) & are not compatable with ADSL BBand nor are they connected to the PSTN network until the VM fibre optic cables reach the hubsite, which can by 30 miles away from your home.
  • Thanks for your replies. I was aware that i needed to change from Virgin media's cable line to BT's but i thought it was a flick of a switch type thing as ive previously had bt as a provider. Anyway i'll probably be going with the anytime landline calls since its cheaper to pay an extra fiver a month than the £122 connection fee
