6 year old debt

I've debts with few credit cards and 2 banks, in total about £9000. All over 6 year old. I've been in and out of UK a lot in the last few years andmoved few addresses. I haven't acknowledge any debts for just over 6 years, it is more of the case of the lenders doesn't know my current addresses. I haven't been on electrol register as I'm not eligible to vote in UK.
I now wants to put my name on electrol register as I can now vote. So I expect soon as my name appears on register the lenders will get in touch with me.???
What should I do if any of the bank or creditcard company get in touch with me?

Please advise good people.
Thanks

  • If they are not county court judgements then you can send the statue barred letter template
  • Thanks for your reply.
How can I find out whether there was county court judgement or not.
I moved around so much lost track of the debts and all the related paper works. Is there a way to find out?

In England & wales - You can check for any CCJs in your name at the above - there is a small fee - I think its £8.

What if there was a CCJ, what should I do then?

In Northern Ireland the act to refer to is - the Limitation (Northern Ireland) 1989 Order but I think the rules are pretty much the same otherwise.

After a 6year period has elapsed from the date of CCJ even if there is a CCJ your creditor would still need to apply to court to chase you after that 6years. I believe they have to give the court a reason as to why they have not chased you sooner (although you not being on the electoral register may count as a good reason I'm not sure).

  • Thanks Tixy for your explanation.
If they found a good reason for they could not chased me sooner then I could be in trouble again.

If there is NOT any CCJ then can I open a bank account with a high street bank. would that be a problem?

sam, just a neutral question (well maybe its a bit judgemental) but why did you abscond abroad with debt outstanding?

I'm a foreigner so had to leave the UK every time my visa ran out. I now become permanent resident and would like to stay in uk permanently and sort my self out.
