Mattresses

Hi fellow MoneySavers!

I'm looking for a new mattress to replace the current one I have - it is a six or so years old Airsprung Miami, which I understand to be a medium firmness, open coil mattress. This is to go on a traditional slatted bed base. As I live in rented accommodation, I need to stick to my landlady's budget. I haven't had a figure but think it is probably around £175 (not great!), though I might be able to top it up myself a bit (I think my absolute maximum will be £250). I need a mattress that would give me good, firm back support as I often get backache.

Anyway, I understand that a pocket sprung mattress (more springs the better) would suit me best. Have been to shops like Dreams and they seemed most comfortable (if overly expensive in a shop like that). So, I was hoping to get opinions on these ones:

Heliopaedic Gladiator Pocket 1000 (mattressman website)

Sleepeezee Ortho Crest Pocket 1000 (mattressman website)

Or should I consider a firm, open coil mattress at this sort of budget? Such as...

Apologies for the lack of links - I had these but can't send this message with them as I am a new user. I'm basing these choices on their prices and avoiding the brands that I've seen get poor feedback on MSE (obviously, haven't read every post, but have ruled out Silentnight, Sealy and Rest Assured, which the only other brands I have seen in this sort of price range).

That's what they tell you in shops when they want you to pay more. The truth is that you would be better off with between 1000 and 1800 springs (in a king size mattress).

If it is going on a slatted base then you would have to lay pegboard or hardboard over the slats to use a pocket sprung only mattress on it.

Stay away from the big brand names, otherwise you will struggle to find a good quality pocket sprung mattress for that price. You may be better off with a top of the range open coil sprung mattress.

Thanks Tim, that's very helpful. My only query is what is a big brand name? I know that sounds a bit stupid, but I only really knew of the Silentnight group, Airsprung, and Ikea before looking into this. Heliopaedic, Sleepeezee, Kozeesleep and Myer's are all new to me.

Perhaps I should simply search under those names in the forum and see what people say?

It should be Healthopaedic who are part of Highgate beds. They are quite a large independent manufacturer who are low to middle of the quality range. The one quoted is a low quality entry level pocket sprung mattress.

Sleepeezee is a very large brand name who are a little better than Silentnight, but not much.

Myers used to be a good brand, but it seems that they have gone down the same road as some of the other big brands by lowering quality to cut production costs.

There are two Kozeesleeps. One is called Kozeesleep and the other Kozee Sleep. They used to be the same company, but split into two after a fall out. the better quality of the two is Kozeesleep (with the blue logo). They are supposed to be the largest independent bed manufacturer in the UK.

You are still better off going for smaller manufacturers to get better quality for your money.
