I used to work in a tartan mill in Edinburgh so know more about tartan, clans and all things twee and Scottish, than is healthy.
The majority of tartans have been designed since the 1820’s. There is no real evidence that different clans wore different tartans before the banning of wearing tartan in 1746 (for 36 years) rather each weavers design varied according to which colours of dye could be found in plants for that area, and the pattern was used to identify it as having been woven by that weaver rather than the wearer belonging to that clan. The plant or flower that was worn in their cap was the usual method of identifying which of the clan’s the person belonged to. King George the IV’s visit to Edinburgh in 1822 bought about a resurgence in tartan and it was during the next 50 years that the majority of clan tartans were designed.
Anyhow that’s enough of my waffle about tartan etc, back to the question about which ones you should avoid. The only tartans that are ‘restricted’ are royal tartans, which by definition should not be worn by anyone other than the royal family. This does technically include Royal Stewart though King George V allowed this to be unrestricted but I think this was only to citizens of the Commonwealth. Certain tartans are subject to copyright (the Burberry being the most obvious) and only certain mills are licenced to produce them but if you can buy the fabric then it should be fine to make into dog coats in.
Hope this helps.2007 comping challenge - Won £25 / need £1040 -

I just don't believe some folk!
Who could be offended by that? Eejit!
What offends me are wee dugs being carried about in handbags, not what they are wearing.
Keep making your wee coats.0 -
ROFL, dogs in handbags. Now that's just weird. Dog in a handbag. Must be a celebrity (who we don't even know) thing.

It takes all sorts to make a world and you meet all sorts doing boot sales :rotfl: :rotfl:and I'm sure I saw a smirk pass his lips as he turned away, so maybe he did it for a laugh to see my reactionI just thought I'd ask other Scottish peeps on this site for consumer research purposes.

The only way I would be offended is if you forced the dog to wear something underneath it. I can assure all readers that nothing is worn under my tartan. Everything is in fine working orderSomething Really Interesting0
