Hi, we have an old gold coloured honeywell thermostat for the heating in the hallway, works okay, but I am wondering, would we benefit from replacing it, either with a newer mechanical one, or a digital one? We live in a rented house and I am keen to lower our energy consumption as much as we can, so dont mind paying out for the new stat and the fitting as long as it can be installed with exsisting connections ie no new wiring etc. I have heard you can get wireless ones where it transmitts the temp from the room its in, so can keep main unit in hall and have wireless bit in lounge? Sorry if this sounds thick, I just know nothing about heating systems!
PS> forgot to say, we have a digital timer for the heating and hot water in the airing cupboard, and I dont want to change it, so would this make a difference as to what installation would suit us?

If you want to lower your consumption just turn the existing thermostat down. As you are in rented and know nothing about heating systems, leave well alone. You can have 2 thermostats, but unless you can define what you want them to do, they are not going to help you.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I understand the concept of turn down the thermostat = less gas burnt, im not that dense! I meant, acuracy wise on temp etc would it benefit to replace, that was all! Never mind.

Is see your point, My digital stat can do half a degree, the old mechanical one about 5! Not sure if it would made that much difference though.0

If it aint broke why fix it?
Do you feel too hot or cold in the rooms around the house..if yes consider why (balancing radiators and adjusting TRVs where fitted my be sufficient)..if not leave well alone.
Whilst you might save some money in heating costs with a wireless thermostat it will be offset by the cost of replacement (parts and labour)...so whether you get payback on it may depend on the length of your tenancy.0
