Used car problem

Hi all, first time I have posted on this particular forum, after having many problems with our Freelander we decided to not bother getting it fixed and buy ourselves a little run around to keep us going for a bit.

We bought a Y reg Rover 25, with 38000 miles on the clock, has a bit of rust but fixable.

We picked it up last night, got home and parked on the drive and noticed a strong smell of petrol, there was also a hissing noise coming from the rear of the car which stopped when we removed the fuel cap.

Took it to our local garage and it needs a new petrol tank!

Now I did notice a bit of a smell on Saturday when we looked at it, but stupidly didn't mention it.

We paid cash for it from a private buyer, my husband was thinking about calling and just mentioning it, but I just wondered do we have any recourse here or should we just put it down to experience?

The car is find apart from this issue, the mechanic said it seems to be a sound little car other than this.

Thanks!

not sure about the car but does it have a locking flap or flap over the filler cap,

if so buy a push in type of filler cap and try that for a couple of days,
all I am thinking is that the 'breather' may be blocked and causing a build up of pressure, and this would be the cheaper option

no recourse, sounds like a blocked breather which could have collapsed the tank

new tank or cap, many people here think it petrol cap i think tank wich isnt a big deal really tank is fairly cheap can order form motor factor or get one from scrappy, if its the cap go along to scrappy and get one for couple of quid.

few tips with 1.4 1.6 Rov 25's keep a good eye on the engine.
reguarly check the oil level and oil condition, under the oil filler cap any white gunk under the oil filler cap there's a problem that needs sorting.
check water level also if it loses water with no rad or obviose pipe leaks get it to a garage.
    service regular.
keep eye on engine temps if it starts reading high temps check water and all mentioned above.

all ROV's on the K14 (1.4) and K16 (1.6) and 1.8 and 2.0 engines have head gasket problems being that they go and its costly to fix them and usually pop on the 25.000 to 35.000 miles mark once its done its should be ok if the new headgasket set (multi-layered steel headgasget as supposed to the normal rubber lined ones) and a headsaver (a sheet of metal placed to make up for the space that is lost due to the cylynder head being "skimmed") and new cylinder headbolts (or "strech bolts" as they do excactly that when tightened is strech) used good comon practice on all cars that have had the cylinder head removed.

i love rov's personally (im 25 and male) and have owned 4 of them since i passed my test 3 of wich popped the head gaskets and cost me about £150 in parts and 2 days fitting each(self taught mechanic)i vowed never to have another after the 4 one was pinched.

3 head gaskets and you still " love rov's ", you are easily pleased, I would say that all Rovers are total carp.

there are manufacturer lovers out there who stick to one manufacturer coz they like their models ease of parts cost etc. my 1.4 rov's would out do any 1.6i escort in perfomance, handling, interior quality, and trim availibilty wallnut dash, electrics, space e.t.c. but came in at a slightly price higher in parts cost thats where frds had the upper hand though :P

we all have favourates though i've moved away from rov's and mg's eventhough mg bringing new models for next year i wont be rushing into get one i'm what you call open minded till i find a love for another manufacturer and model of car.
