Termination charges with BT?

This year in May we agreed to take on their unlimited phone calls package for a year however we are now moving from our flat into a caravan and need to terminate our BT line which we have had for 18 months. Obviously we cannot have a landline to a touring caravan. I don't mind pay an early termination charge on the unlimited package deal but don't want the landline bit thrown in also Can any one advise on the best way to approach this?

you cant do anything I'm afraid but pay up.
You signed a contract and knowing BT, they will want you to honour it.

    Sorry
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Good luck in the caravan through the winter.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • the charge is £8.00 a month for each month left on your contract

Which covers both the cost of cancelling the line and the call package early.;)
  • As a heads up to eveyone who has line rental with BT but calls with another provider:

I initially had the free eve/weekend call package with BT but moved my calls away from them to Sky in April 2008, and retained the BT line rental. I recently have tried to moved my calls and line rental to Tiscali and have received a bill for early termination charges. I queried this as my contract was 12 months, which obviously was up in April 2009, and was told that I was being charged the termination fees because the contract automatically renewed in April 2009 and that although I had moved my calls away from BT, Sky had only told them to not charge me for calls...they hadn't implicitly told them to take me off the free eve/weekend call package.

I would have thought that by changing my contract to another provider, it was logical that the first providers service was cancelled?????

Just another sneaky money making scheme by BT and a heads up to anyone else in this position to ensure that u call BT and state clearly that you want to cancel you package and only want line rental.

  • We signed up to BT for phone and broadband in February 08. The broadband was on an 18 month contract and expired at the end of August 09, and as far as I knew we weren't tied to a contract with the phone. We have now left BT and were assured that there would be no cancellation charges. We now have a £25 cancellation fee for the phone (apprarently for cancelling the evening and weekends package?) and a £25 'disconnection' fee for the broadband, on top of what seems to be a random £27 which they may or may not charge.

Can they get away with this?
