Health and Safety gone mad!!!

  • When fostering was asked about the lead for the keetle and how short is it. I said kettle did not have a lead as it sat on gas stove. Still failed Elf and SafT for it though!
  • I have worked for Costa Coffee for several years as a supervisor (not anymore though) and must say that the rule of not giving hot water to customers is told to all staff in all shops.
The warming up a baby bottle though, we just used to leave the jug of hot water on the counter (away from others) for the parent to sort out themselves.

As someone else pointed out, a bit of common sense is all that is needed.

Wow, did you query them on it?
  • Hello all

I shall not be pushing it further as I feel it would make me as petty as them (A storm in a teacup):D

I think the rule is stupid and almost unbelievable but do not think it worth the time and energy involved to pursue things further. I shall vote with my feet and as I said will not even take up their offer of free tea and cakes as obviously if I took my mother she would not be allowed to have hot water with her cake!

If I were to have an accident and tip the contents of the pot over some-one I doubt theirpain would be any less severe if I did not include a teabag in the liquid. In fact maybe it is too dangerous for an untrained customer to carry a tray with hot liquids on it to a table.

I do not think I had better take that train of thought any further as some jobsworth might take it seriously and we will all have to have luke warm tea served at the table.

Fair enough - that said, if you took it to the papers, got a half-decent journalist to investigate and highlight the inconsistencies in their approach, you'd possibly see changes.....

Whatever it is - if it's not against Health & Safety, it is definitely against the Data Protection Act !
  • Or a case of that well known crime of 'Invasion of Privacy' (Invading of Privacy Act 2009)

It seems to be the norm for jobs worths to blame it on Health and Safety and if that does not cover it, blame the data protection act

Then you will get the likes of Richard [STRIKE]Littledick[/STRIKE] Littlejohn in the Daily Mail picking up this story and publishing it in his column as a "Elf & Safety Gone Mad" story, without him (as usual) knowing the full facts of the story.
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?
  • Hello every-one

I did not expect to get such a selection of replies when I first "vented my spleen" about Costa Coffee. It does make me think if I were to take things further, making my complaint more widely known, they would receive enough bad publicity to outweigh their own rules.

Certainly I would not now go into any of their establishments for any refreshment on principle. If there were many other people doing the same they would find their profits going down and might land up having to close outlets. All for the sake of a silly, nonsensical rule which has not been properly thought through.

When will large corporations learn that one dissatisfied customer tells far more people about their experience than the vast majority of customers who have ordinary or good service.
