only my mum really and you lot, i have said stuff in passing to my sister (i cant do that/go there as i am paying back my debt) but she never asks any details so i dont tell anyone, and to be honest its not that much (nearly gone now) i am just glad i stopped when i did, before i confessed all on a thread on here 14/05/06 i was going to get another credit card  but i decided enough was enough (then i told my mum), nearly debt free, fingers crossed the end of the week - i would have got debt free in under a month then, thank god for ebay :j
Posting you have done so incredibly well and so quickly. Imagine if you had gone on as you were, you would be nowhere near this position.

exactly, thats why i am hopefully never going to leave this site and give out advice, i think the turning point/light bulb momment comes after you decide to stop all the 'stupid' spending. Thankfully i did :D i cant belive it, that post i made about not having money etc etc and it was all my fault, i cant belive i actully posted that  anyway, not long now, just have to wait for my cheques to clear and i will be away :j prob friday, sad thing is though is mum said to me it would be good for me to buy something (once debt free) and then be able to tally the feeling up but do you know what i cant, all i have been thinking about is not spending :rotfl:

Hi, this is my first post here, I usually lurk in the freebies forums! I don't actually have any uncontrolled debt, well apart from the hideous student loans people who also don't know how much I owe them and have not had a statement from in two years but still take money from me, but that's by the by!
My boyfriend has had lots of debts in the past before we met, and him and his family worked hard to clear them all! Last year he got a couple of credit cards  and knew he was spending on them, goodness knows what on though. Now he is up to £2188 (limit £2000) on MBNA mastercard and I guess £1500 on an RBS Platinum visa.
The REAL problem is, he knows I know he has a few debts at the moment but he is doing his best to convince me that they are under control and nearly cleared. We do have our own flat together and I've seen demand letters very recently. One asking for the excess on MBNA and the other asking him to urgently contact RBS to discuss the account.
I really can't leave it until I have people knocking at the door and I ask frequently how he is doing with them, urging him to tell me if anything is wrong. Any ideas on how I can help him at least admit that not all is going to plan. I'm very worried!

No- one but me knows about my overdraft.OH has got a 'thing' about overdrafts so even though he has a credit card which is bigger than my overdraft he would go mad! It is my personal money so I will pay it back, quidco and paypal are helping greatly there!
He obviously knows about our joint debt ( 2 months till clear, hopefully!) and then we can both allow ourselves a bit more money to clear the overdraft/ his c.card etc.
My mum knows money is tight, but not that we actually owe any, and 2 friends know the full extent of it all.....

OH and I know about the size of our debt. His Mum knows that we are in debt, but not by how much. My parents have no idea that we're in debt and they would be horrified if they found out. When we can't afford to go out we tell friends that we're saving up for our house (which we're trying to do as well!) and they're happy with that.

However I do bore everyone to tears with new websites to help save money etc. My parents are Quidco converts and every opportunity I have I try and mention moneysavingexpert to friends too!

  • My OH knows as some of it is joint debt. My Mum knows that I short on money at the moment, but doesn't know how much I am in debt. I think she has a rough idea thou, as I am doing a car boot and doing a Avon round now aswell just to get some extra money in
Month June 06 current debt stands at: Loan with OH £20,000, Egg Card £7324 now £7191.00, Barclaycard £700, Overdraft was £2550 now £2400, Car Loan £297 a month finishes in Nov 06, £9.00 Savings, Piggysbank points 370

My Oh knows but then it is both our debts and as all the CC and loan are in his name it would be difficult for him not to know.

I have two close friends who sort of know how much just not all the little details, however they know enough and are aware i am on here and that i am working hard to get DF.

My dad knows things are tight but not that we are in debt nor how much.

My OHs parents again know things are tight but know nothing about the debt and i do not want to tell them as they have never been in debt themselves and take a very dim veiw of it, in fact they don't really understand how you can get into serious debt, plus i know i would get most of the blame for it even when it was both my OH and me and as things are strained anyway between me and the MIL i really don't want to add to the situation.

That is part of the reason MSE and especially the DFW board is so important, support and advice and for the most part it is all unjudgemental.

    Some success already!!
Just by getting everything off my chest yesterday on the forum I was able to drop enough hints to my boyfriend that I knew about his debts that eventually told me more or less all he owes. I'm going to start a money diary myself because I'd like to manage my money far better than I already do. We've agreed to work together on these debts so we can save for the important stuff!
What would people recommend? I have savings that would cover his debts and at the moment have given him some money to pay off a lump sum. Is it better him to be paying into 'the bank of Merg' rather than the credit cards, silly question isn't it??:o
