Have you told anyone about your debt?

My boyfriend knows and I also told his best mate when we were all drunk about a year ago! There's all you lot of course and now my mum knows. Even though I asked her not to tell my older sister she probably has. I think I might have told my best mate but I can't remember. I don't really feel the need to tell anyone else (although boyfs parents are becoming suspicious as to why I can't help him out more). As someone said earlier, I've got all the help and support I need on here. Thanks you guys!Debt Free Nerd No. 89, LBM: April 2006, Debt at highest (Sept 05): £40,939.96
NOW TOTALLY DEBT FREE!!!!!!!! Woooo hooooooo!!! DEBT FREE DATE: 23 December 20090 -
My mum, hubby's mum and close friends know that we have some debt but I've never discussed how much! Wouldn't tell my dad, he'd be horrified by the figure and I'd never hear the end of it.
Funnily enough I know roughly how much most of our friends owe though, makes me sound a right nosey cow doesn't it!
DH knows as it's joint debt but when we were discussing it recently he thought we still owed about 18k - shows how much attention he pays!
Think I'll probably tell everyone how much it was when we've paid it all off but until then it's a closely guarded secret (except on here of course!)0 -
My parents know I'm in debt, but not how much. My ex knows it all thoDFW Nerd #104 I :heartpuls my Kitten

I haven't told anyone. My OH knows as it is his debt too but no one else.
I don't think you need to tell other people as you long as you have the support you need.0 -
My ex-partner knows about my debt, that is it. My parents knew i had debts and they paid most of them off and i think i took it for granted and got back into debt again. Going to do it by myself this time though. I need to learn my lesson!

I'm ashamed to say I got my first credit card (a Barclaycard) when I was 18 and I've never been debt free since. (They really saw me coming  ). I'm now almost 47 and planning to retire in less than 10 years. It was always my shameful secret, until a few years ago when a close friend disclosed similar problems to me in confidence. We have been co-conspirators ever since. Just lately we have both reached a point where things could not continue. Her partner was completely unaware and mine had an idea, but didn't know the exact figure. We had our individual lightbulb moments at around the same time, after a number of false starts and 'consolidations'. Our partners are both now completely in the picture and are supporting us as we try to sort it out. We keep each other going with phonecalls and progress reports and I do think it's helpful being able to tell someone. I also post on here every day and it has been very helpful for me to know there are so many others with the same struggles and triumphs. :TOfficial DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0

No one knows about our debt, except some very close friends. I didn't know about it until November last year when my husband told me his business had lost everything including the £100,000 he had remortgaged our house for. I have never been in debt in my life, always worked hard and come from a culture that buying your house was your security in old age. We are now in our late 50's and are drowning in debt, I feel ashamed, isolated, embarrassed, I lead a double life. Some days I can't stop crying0

I've also kept it to myself..well apart from everyone here, which is how many people??! :rotfl:

Aww Lindylou (hugs), please don't feel isolated - you have all of us here to support you in any way we can.
It might help to post your SOA, as there will be lots of good advice on how to cut outgoings, etc.
