    Mortgage-free Glee!
Just PVA the surface, let it dry then line the walls with a good gauge lining paper. I have got excellent results doing this - much better than attempting to plaster yourself and much cheaper than getting a plasterer in.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Just wait 'til you want to strip it again! What is this fetish that the world has with PVA? Sorry not getting at you angela - its one of my bugbears.

Yes min 1200 guage poss 1400 if its that bad. Hide the seams and it will look like a solid wall.

    Cheers

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I stripped woodchip off the stairs and landing and was left with very patchy walls, top layer of plaster came off in places - just didn't have anything in the budget for paying someone to skim and decided to
    a) try the wickes own brand smooth skim
    and if that didn't work
    b) use lining paper and very thick top paper, didn't really want to go down this route when it was such a mammoth task anyway.

It was only in patches, though quite large ones in parts. I wet the surfaces, then 'pasted' the stuff on with an emulsion brush, I recall watering down the stuff to make it easier to apply. Then smoothed over with their blade thing. Lots of patience and I was left with decent surfaces, sanded them down a bit afterwards, nothing I could leave just painted (not a look I like anyway) but certainly smooth enough for wallpaper. In fact, those walls are now the smoothest in the house.
