Installing new gas and lec

Hi,

I recently bought a new property that didn't have a gas meter in.

I signed up with british gas who offered to re-connect my electricity and fit a new gas meter for free if I signed up with them.

Is this usually the case?

Cheers

Any provider will fit a gas meter on a new connection for free - so there is nothign amiss here.

Additionally and with regards to the electricity as long as you did not run up a huge bill forcing the disconnection -- then recconection again will be free, regardless of supplier. (its just far quicker with whomever is the current provider)

When you buy a property, it's not usual for the utilities to have been disconnected. Was this a repo? Even then it's not usual.

Getting a new gas meter shouldn't cost you anything, but the supplier probably won't connect it to the pipes in the house i.e. after the meter. They will probably leave that for you to pay a gas-safe engineer to do, once they are happy the whole installation in the property is safe.

Were BG the previous supplier to the premises?

the gas suppliers often contract the work of putting the meter in to their metering assest managment companies as opposed to you getting a gas safe registered engineer,

How long has the property been with out gas and is there a visable gas pipe anywhere?

Well the house was not lived in for over two years so that is maybe why the took the meter out. Strange I know. I haven't seen it before.

I thought I was getting a great deal with this. Or well If they are too expensive when I move in I can always change.

Thanks for all of your help.

has the property has been empty for two years any gas service pipe the property may be dead and therefore not fit for use - best thing to do is locate the pipe then contact the gas network for your area for a live or dead check - if live then it is simply a case of registering with a gas supplier of choice who will then arrange for a meter to be installed.

If dead then you will need to go back to the appropriate gas network to have a new gas service laid to the property,
