I used to like CU and GA, proper Insurers who believed in the values of Insurance and putting the customer first.

You could tell about a customer just by them having a GA / CU policy and renewing it each year even though they could get cheaper cover else where. We still have customers who have had the same GA property / business policies that they have renewed for many decades.

We employed the local GA manager / inspector when his branch was closed following the merger on a part time basis as he was close to retirement. He brought loads of his customers who had become friends, he was very olde worlde, he would vet potential customers and morally judge them. If they passed his test he would offer a CGU policy, if they did not he would offer them another Insurer product.
  • Ceilings are not covered by insurance unless caused by storm damage.

The simple solution is to get them repaired before they fall down.

Does this count as subsidence? As I've found from researching buildings insurance, not all policies cover this

Normally subsidence starts from the ground upwards.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
