Reduction in Carers Allowance on CSA1

Hi All,

Im currently checking the assessment for my partner as he is paying extortionate amounts every week for his daughter and is now at the stage where he cant pay his rent and is about to become homeless.

Im looking at the element of Carers Allowance and I believe like most assessments, they have not reduced the amount due to the childs age.

Im trying to find the rates of the full amount of the carers allowance and when I check the income support rates I cant find the carer amount (although I can find the child allowance and the premiums).

I need these amounts so I can work out what the reduction should have been and then I can check if it has been applied.

Does anyone know the specific amount?

Im looking for the rates for 2005 and 2008.

Would be really grateful for any help here as I dont want to see him on the streets and this whole situation is really affecting him.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi thanks for that but I dont think that is the right carers allowance.

I can see carers allowance under income support rules but this allowance is for caring for disabled people so cant seem to identify specifically which carer allowance the csa base it on.

    Does anyone know?

    Thanks

It is the personal allowance for an adult over 25, so this year for example, the full rate would be £64.30.

Is Carers Allowance on CSA assessments not the amount that the PWC is allowed as caring for a child [ irrelevant of ability ] I think I read on here somewhere that the amount allowed should be reduced by 50% when the qualifying child reaches 14 and reduces again at some point????
  • Kelloggs are you saying that this year would be the child allowance amount and an amount for an adult over 25 + family premium? In 2008 the maintenance needed was £117 per week and the full amount needed to be paid. Do you know the specific rates for 2008 please?

Skib, yes there should be reductions and this is where Im trying to see if the reduction has been applied.

    Thanks folks

Last year the full adult rate was £60.50 and the child rate was £52.59. The family premium was £16.75.

Were new assessments actually carried out at the time?

    So, maintenance needed for 1 child under 11 would be £60.50 + £16.75 + £52.59 - £18.80 = £111.04.

    + If 2 children it would be £60.50 + £16.75 + £52.59 + £52.59 - £18.80 - £12.55 = £151.08

Child of between 11 and 14 would be £95.92.

If 1 child between 12 and 14 take off 25% of the £60.30
  • Hi Kelloggs,

Im still waiting for the rest of the data but the last assessment I have is as follows:

    Dated 05.03.08
    Child Allowance £47.45
    Carer Allowance £44.36
    Premium £16.43
    Less child benefit -£12.10

So Maintenance needed is £96.14 but maintenance to be paid is £117.85

The child became 14 in August 08 so this is why Im trying to check the rates and see if it has been applied.

She turned 11 in Aug 05 but no reassessment was done then either so this is why it seems that the rate hasnt been reduced.

Also, why would he have to pay more money than the actual amount of maintenance needed?

Really appreciate your help with this.

You would pay more than the maintenance needed because even after your exempt income has been applied and deducted, half of what is left is more than the maintenance needed. this means that an additional calculation called the additional element is carried out and added to the maintenance needed. Then the protected income is calculated and if you can pay the full amount you do, if not you pay less until you reach the protected income figure.

The year you need is actually 07 because the income support rates change on the same day the tax does so you are a month early for the 08 figures.

In 2007 the full adult person rate was £59.15 so 75% of that would be £44.36 so yes, a reduction for the ages from 11 - 14 has been applied.
