But *hypothetically* speaking, if somebody was in a situation like Breakdown is now but sorted it out, after a little time would credit rating not be better than if it had never happened? (Regardless of lessons learnt and our distaste for credit)

In short there are a variety of lenders who will have less stringent lending requirements for people with a previous history of problems, however even the “sub-prime” lenders normally want to see at least 6-12 months of either stable payments of the existing debts, or that the debts are fully cleared.

Unfortunately even when the debts are cleared the slow / late payment history can in some cases remain on your credit file for up to 6 years, this will normally deter most of the high street lenders from granting standard products i.e current accounts, overdrafts & credit cards, but in most cases things like secured loans. Car loans, and mortgages will be evaluated on the individuals current ( i.e last 12-24 months) status rather than purely relying on they previous history.

In short all lenders have different scoring parameters and the question of “when can I get credit” is as long or as short as piece of string depending on the above factors
 It’s hard enough remembering my opinions - without remembering my reasons for them
