Sending money to an unknown seller

OH is buying a bank of batteries in the UK to be shipped abroad (our house is on solar power).
He found the seller on ebay but the items are not on ebay.
The guy has good feedback but how can we protect ourselves when we send the money?
The seller says he has contacted a shipping agent & the price is £250.
This rang alarm bells with us as the figure is just too neat & rounded.
We could ask that we contact & arrange the shipping ourselves, but that still leaves the battery purchase which amounts to over £1200 to safeguard.
TIA. Laura

I would not be considering purchasing this sort of value outside eBay unless it was from a proper company that will take a credit card (not Pay Pal).0
