Detached to semi, good idea or not?

Hi all,

I am currently in a 3 bed detached with 2 ok sized rooms and 1 very small box room. With 2 kids, I am concerned that the small room is going to be a problem as by 10 month old grows up and wants more space.

A semi close by has gone up for sale, and its on a corner plot. I am considering going for it, with a view to using the profit from the sale to build a two story extension on the side of the house. Then, I'd end up with a much bigger house for pretty much the same (hopefully!?!).

So, anyone got any opinions / advice on this, please? Any rough ideas as to what the two-up extension would cost? Is it quite easy to get planning permission for that sort of thing? Anyone live in a semi at the mo? I'm aware of the noise potential, but frankly with 2 very young kids it would be coming from my house anyway!?!

Thanks in advance.

Duncan

ask your local planning officer first of all what they think. They are usually pretty helpful.

I lived in Semis for many years with my parents and I certainly dont remember noise ever being a problem. All depends onyour neighbours I guess
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...

Yeh, I'll give them a call, thanks.

I'm the same - I grew up in a semi (actually on the same street I am now thinking of moving to, so an indentical house).

It just feels slightly wrong to be moving from a detached to a semi, even though the semi would end up being a far bigger house when worked on.

Going to have to seriously think about it.

    Thanks again.

My next door neighbour has just paid £24 K for a small 2 floor extension.

Cheers Sumostar! That's what I was after. I was guessing about 30k for a reasonable sized extension over 2 floors.
