Any chance of the stamp duty holiday being extended?

As the title says, what are the chances of the stamp duty holiday being extended?
I've been reading a few articles on the internet and the seems to be a lot of support for the government extending the stamp duty holiday but will they really do it? My girlfriend and I are first time buyers and we've found a house (£155k) however we haven't been looking for long so we don't want to rush into anything.
Someone on the forum mentioned the pre-budget speech on December 9th but that's a bit late in the day if it isn't being extended.

The government can do what it likes when it likes so don't rule it out.
I would like to see stamp duty changed so that the increases only applied to the additional values.0 -
Stamp duty exemption due to end 31 December.
Pre-Budget speech due 9 December.
I think anything's possible.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

I had assumed that would be the response, wasn't sure whether I may have missed anything that could have been a hint from the government. Oh well.
Thanks anyway.0 -
They cannot afford to extend it, so they probably will...0

It is possible, although the fact that house prices are rising make it less likely.
Tough call really.0 -
Personally i think and hope (buying soon) it will be extended, otherwise if they reintroduce stamp duty it will hit already sluggish house sales. BUT i think they will leave it till the last minute to announce an extension to get as many people as possible buying quick before DEC 31st deadline.

Same here Brighty - erady to exchange contracts but the stress of getting to that deadline would be much eased if say on the 1st Dec it 'leaked' there was likely to be a stamp duty extension in that 8th Dec speech...MFW #185

regardless of the end being nigh, the market round here has slowed to an almost stop for the christmas period (starting in september with the morrisons ads of course!)
people must be hopeful it's going to be extended, for me it's a silly time of year to put it back up, just as the overall market is slowly picking up
best to wait til the summer (please) Alistair!0 -
Any chance of the grasping government doing the right thing? No.
Expect an increase in the price of fuel for New Years Day as well.0 -
We are praying they extend it!! We are buying a new build but not completing til the first quarter of next year.... but we found it months before the stamp-duty is due to come back..... our house is just at the bottom of the threshold as well and as FTB we are probably the type of person the govt. is trying to help....doh!!
No idea though. Personally I'd agree with Brighty if I had to put money on it that they will extend but leave it til the last minute to stimulate as many people buying as possible.0
