Ex and car

Hi can anyone give me some advice.
My ex and I seperated in February and when he left he took the car. The car is registered in my name and I have all the paperwork and receipt for the car.
I have never given him anything in writing to say he can keep the car and circumstances have now changed and i need the car back, he is refusing.
Does anyone know how easily I can get the car back, he had the only key.
Thanks for any advice

I wouldn't be so sure. The police told me it was a civil matter when i reported my car stolen when i broke up with my ex.
I didn't have a receipt though, so maybe that would make all the difference, but basically they weren't interested at all, even though the car belonged to me and i was the reg. keeper.
I did seek legal advice and the solicitor said i'd have to take ex to court for the car
I hope you have more luck than me, i think if you keep on at the police they should do something, but be aware they might try and get rid of you. My solicitor said to complain to the inspector if they still refused to act on my report, but it didn't come to that cos i got it back eventually.0 -
It isn't a very decent thing to do to phone the police and report it stolen because he hasn't stolen it.
You have allowed him the car for all this time and now find yourself wanting it back but I would think that you already know that it wouldn't be a decent thing to do to take it back from him, thats why you are asking on here.
Get yourself another car otherwise you might find yourself forking out for hefty legal fees.0 -
Thank you guys for your advice I will be speaking to a solicitor and the police today.
Ruby moon whether or not it is the decent thing to do or not is beside the point, this is a man who pays next to nothing to support his 2 children, has a £5000 motorbike and has my property, wont tell me where he lives and where my property is. I just wanted to know where i stood.

Get a duplicate v5 from the DVLA and SORN the vehicle.Wait for the screams when the police stop him. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I think it's an idea to pop into your local police station and let them know that he has your car. If he gets a speeding ticket or anything, the fine will be plopping through your letterbox.Turn £100 into £10,000 in 2010 member # 247

Is he even insured to use the car? if you were jointly insured, take his name off, sounds like he is playing games with you, and your the one with the children and need the car back.
if the police won't get involved, then SORN it and sit back.... but be aware any fines incured for having a car on the road when it is registered off road, you may be liable.Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0
