i know how to put pictures or music onto a cd,
but how can i put both on, so that the pictures play as a slide show accompanied by some music?

Try Ulead Cd & DVD pictureshow simple to use with various transition effects between photos, you choose your backing track load up the photos and burn to CD or DVD from within the program
Amazon have versions 3 and 4 on offer at the moment0 -
With XP you have Windows Movie Maker that will do a good job.0

Microsoft Photostory 3 is free if you have XP and is easy to use for creating CD's that will play on a computer. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx
You can add your music or have it generate music. There are other options without it being too complicated such as being able to choose the transition from one picture to the next and the ability to be able to zoom in or pan across a photo these can make a slideshow more fun and dynamic.
This site is very good for telling you about Photostory 3

The link below gives instructions how put a Photostory slideshow onto a DVD, the example uses Sonic MyDVD, but I have used Nero VisionExpress to good effect.
