What to do when cant find receipt?

Options
One of the hinges on my laptop is broken and i know its within the 1st year of purchase but i cant find the receipt. Is there anything else that the shop will accept as proof of payment or am i gonna have to fork out for the repair myself? Would a credit card statement be enough?

Yes the credit card statement should be perfectly acceptable

  • Statement would be fine as you are exercising your statutory rights under Sales of Goods Act as the goods are faulty.

If however (as a complete aside and the forum is quiet tonight, nothing on the TV etc....) you were simply returning a purchase because you didn't like it, it was the wrong colour, it didn't fit etc..... then the retailer would be within their right to simply refuse as they are not obliged refund / exchange if the goods aren't faulty. If they do have a refund / exchange policy though for non-faulty items, it usually refers to a receipt as being necessary which is their right.

    You'll be fine

    Thanks very much.

Now to a question i didnt plan on asking. The hinge is cracked and some people have told me that this will be classed as wear and tear and wont be covered by the warranty. Thing is, i dont have a copy of it. Surely its covered?

I know the easy answer is to call the maker of the laptop but i cant find an official website of theirs. I'll ask about this in a different section

So you don't have the receipt, you don't have the warranty documentation.

You'll be saying in a minute you don't have a credit card statement because you paid in cash.

Is this laptop yours or did you 'find' it somewhere?

    All rather suspicious me thinks.

Oh, next time you buy something expensive, it might be a good idea to keep some (or all) of the documentation, don't ya think?

Have you even read the OP? She asks if a credit card statement would be sufficient as proof.

I had a similar problem, where the left corner of the outer case was cracking through natural use, and the right side was showing signs of stress.

I got mine from Comet in May 2008, and the problem needed attention in June 2009. I didn't bother with the branch I bought it at, I just wrote to head office and mocked up a quick diagram in the letter showing where the hinges were cracked, plus quoting SOGA, and after about 2-3 weeks I got a call from a senior advisor at their call centre who arranged for an engineer to come out and have a look at it.

Engineer came out, looked at it for a few minutes and showed me the fault. The internal screws on the hinges had become loose. So he tightened them up and ordered a new outer casing. About a week or so later another engineer came round with the part and fitted it, free of charge, no probs since!

I'd get in touch with the retailer. You don't need a receipt as already pointed out a credit/debit card statement will do as long as it shows the debit to the specific retailer for the specific amount, not a cash withdrawal.

I dont need to justify myself but this was a christmas present and the person who bought it for me cant find the receipt. Yes thats not great but theres nothing i can do about it. If i didnt have proof by the credit card statement then i wouldnt have asked if this was acceptable would i :D

    Well done Keith :T

If you must know, i called currys and its all being dealt with. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=26991087#post26991087

Thanks so much for your help. See you ;)

djb215, glad someone else has had this problem. My problematic hinge is also the right one. Is yours an Advent too?
  • It could be argued by the store that the CC statement simply confirms that a transaction of a certain value in that store was charged to the card that day, i.e. it won't say what the item(s) purchased were so the CC may be refused on that basis if they want to be awkward with you. Personally, if I were you, I would insist they accept it though !!

Yes i know what you mean and this was my concern. In the end though i called them and they took my word for it over the phone. I explained it was a present and that the person who bought it lost it. So instead he took the persons post code and surname and apparently thats enough. Strange, but i'm glad
  • In addition to providing the CC statement you would, presumably, have to also provide the CC that was used for the tranasaction originally (so that they could refund the money to the correct card). This could be problematic if person buying the item, as a gift, is located somewhere distant to you, or the CC has since expired/lost/stolen and been replaced with a new one bearing a different number.
