Hair cut by hairdressing students?

I'm bracing myself for Wednesday when I'm getting my hair cut at the local college by students! They are class 2 which I am hoping is 2nd years....

I don't have anything too elaborate done BUT my hair is dead straight and fine so any mistake shows....

Has anyone else had their hair cut at college?

Not the college but i was walking in the shopping centre one day when there were trainee hairdressers touting for work, aparently they have a room above one of the shops every Monday, They were only doing mens hair but were fine. There were about a dozen students and a couple of teachers flitting from one to the other.
Don't worry the teachers will not let them mess up.

    Thanks, SS.

I must say I was swung by the cost - for a wash, cut and blowdry - £4 !!
  • I've had it done at my local college a few times, turned out fine each time. As SailorSam said the teachers keep an eye on what they're doing so don't worry about them messing up.

I always have mine done at the college and I have always had it cut better than I have ever had it done at the hairdressers. The teacher makes sure they know what is wanted before they start and keep checking them.

I've only had my hair cut by students for at least the last 15 years (I'm 28) as I've never been able to afford a salon cut. I have yet to have a terrible hair cut- Ive had experimental- which was explained to me before the guy came towards my hair with the sissors, Ive had dull- graduated bob, several times in a row- seems to be something students want/need/desire to practice, and I've actually had some really fantastic cuts!

I have been to salons such as Aveda, Toni and Guy, odd boutiquey salons in and around London, training academies like Toni and Guy's academy at Tottenham Ct rd and Vidal Sassoons creative academy. Its now the norm for me, cuts can take anything from 30 minutes to several hours, can be watched by Japanese students in their non-English-speaking heards, to being left alone with the tutor visiting for the final check at the end.

I really trust students -especially in Salons, mainly as they all have teachers who are very good at their jobs, they need very much for you to walk out with an excellent hair cut and happy smile as you are a walking talking advertisement and no salon wants to be put out of business by a students mistakes!
  • I often used to go to the College to have my hair cut, and coloured when my own daughter was a hairdressing student. So did many of the other Mums. None of us ever came out with a bag over our heads !!!

I've had my hair cut by a student, the cut was fine but they took ages and asked me to stand up the whole time so it was easier to see the ends of my hair! It was very cheap though.

my son is a student of hairdressing and when he does mine the teacher always checks and double checks his work and if they couldnt manage would step in.

As well as getting a good deal, you'll be helping someone as well :)

Does anyone know where I can find out where my nearest hairdressing & beauty college is? Is there a website I can put my postcode in and it will come up with my nearest ones? I like the idea of saving money but still looking good!

Buy your bananas in bunches of 5 on Sunday. Then arrange them in order of ripeness and write a day of the week on each banana in felt pen, Monday on the ripest, Friday on the greenest to save time making those decisions on a hectic weekday morning

Well, it went very well! It looked like a completely normal hairdressing salon with the usual reception desk and sofa with magazines. A HUGE long room of hairdressers but the normal sinks, mirrors, seats and so on.

I had my hair washed, a bob then a blow dry. I have the world's finest hair but she was very careful. It did take quite a while for the cut (about 45 minutes or so) and the teacher combed through it and checked the length and layers at the end.

I went to reception and they are working half price this week (don't know why) so the grand total was........ £2.35 !!!!!

However, because I had been in there for well over an hour, I went outside to find a parking ticket on my car so the total suddenly became £27.35 :-(
