uksearchlimited

Hi

My husband has just received a letter from this company regarding an outstanding debt for British Gas on a property we lived in 10 years ago. Strange thing is the house was bought by me in my maiden name and the British Gas account was also in my maiden name however the letter has been sent to my husband (with different surname). I was under the impression I had settled what we owed them. This letter has come totally out of the blue. The letter fromnUKsearch limited has a PO Box number as a contact and when I rang got through to a voice box which was full. Looked on internet and got adifferent number to contact when I rang tried to transfer me and cut me off, rang again and they asked for my number but did not want to give it to them. I have rung British Gas who are looking into it. I just have a bad feeling about it and was wondering if anyone else has had dealings with them or are away if they may be a dubious company.

Thanks

  • Hello, this is a coincidence because I also received a letter from them today and your forum thread is the second Google search result! My letter says I owe British Gas £688(!) from a house share six years ago. Sounds like a scam...

    I believe there is a 6 rule for claiming debts

    http://www.payplan.com/debt-library/joint-and-several-liability-the-limitation-act-1980.php

    The Limitations Act 1980 outlines the time limit within which a creditor can chase a debtor for outstanding debts. The Limitations Act 1980 only applies when no contact has been made between the creditor and debtor within the given time limit and only applies to residents of England and Wales.

    Remember, creditors are still able to pursue an unsecured debt if:
    • They have previously obtained a judgement against you (a CCJ);
    • You have made a payment to the account within the last 6 years (this includes anyone else named on the credit agreement)
    • You have established any contact with the creditor (this can be a phone call or letter to request a balance or change your details), except to deny that the debt exists.

    Hi,

    Don't talk to them !!!! If you ignore them then the 6 year rule will apply, but if you contact them, then it starts again!! At least that is my understanding - raise this in the debt section.

    I probably do that myself isplumm however the law does state

    • You have established any contact with the creditor (this can be a phone call or letter to request a balance or change your details), except to deny that the debt exists.
    Also surely a company and or 3rd party has to provide proof of debt if ist before 6 year rule
  • I was shocked to recieve a letter from the above company, telling me I had an unpaid bill for, as the letter stated PREVIOUS ADDRESS, which strangely I had never heard of or lived in. I tried endlessly all morning to get through to them via the phone but had no luck. I hunted down many different numbers for this company on the internet and after reading the thread on this site I phoned them.It went to voicemail, so I left details of my name and reference numbers from the letter, I told them I had never lived at the address stated and if they carried on pursuring me I would have to take legal action on them.It would be good to hear if anybody who has ever contacted them has had a reply?

    Thanks
