Cancelling a CC and reapplying for the same card?

Hi

Just wondering if this is possible to do?

Basically just closed down and paid off my halifax cc with 0% purchases for 9 months and they have the same deal, so is it possible to reapply for the same card?

There are a couple of other companies (sainsburys and Bank of scotland) offering similar deals but i find halifax quite easy to deal with and there is a branch near my work so can make monthly payments quite easily.

thanks

  • Sainos and BofS are all the same as Halifax. You can I believe reapply for a Halifax card as a new customer almost immediately.

Barclaycard on the other inist you wait 6 months.

As you know, some lenders will not consider applications from former customers for various periods following closure. Others like the Hally accept applicants as 'new' more or less straight away.

You may not get the same credit limit second time round of course. There are no guarantees.

IME, it's advisable to check credit files to make certain the account was actually closed down and marked "settled" soon after the date you cancelled before you re-apply.

  • With HBOS it has a 90 day wait period (3 months) before reapplying for the same or similar type of product.

You'll need to be a little more patient.

While credit searches and an increasing number of online and telephone credit card applications (those which give instant decisions and credit limits) appear on your credit file more or less in real time, this type of data can take a month or two.

May I ask whether you're planning to use the new card solely for purchases? If so, there are some other good deals on offer, which you may want to consider.

To help you further, we would need to know which cards you have at the mo or have held recently, also whether you've applied for any unsuccessfully

  • Egg wanted me to wait 6 months as well. I told them to shove it and went elsewhere ;)

    Hi

I have no other cards and yes am using it solely for purchases, as i mentioned on the comparison sites the other long term 0% deals were sainsburys and bank of scotland but i have no accounts with these providers so paying monthly balances online would be difficult from a different bank account wouldnt it?

Well, Sainsbury's and Bank of Scotland belong to the same stable as Halifax (HBOS)

Rather than risk jumping the gun, I'd approach another lender. I have a Halifax current account and credit card, but also hold cards with other providers. Paying online from a different bank is no problem.

To maximise the 0% period on purchases, 12 months is currently available to new customers from Tesco.
Good online services and no overseas call centres ;)
