Doctors trying to save money - Yasmin

Comments

  • Interestingly enough, Acey, presuming that you keep your second Mirena in for the full five years, Yasmin is way more expensive even though you've used two! £294 for five years of Yasmin, compared with two Mirena coils costing £87.32 each.

GPs are making a push for long-acting reversible contraceptives (IUD, IUS, implant, injection) as the NICE guidelines show they are both cheaper and more effective than pills.

Funny you should say that, went to the docs this afternoon to get more pills and they tried talking me into getting the injection :(
  • I would kick off big time - It just goes to show in this country money comes first people come second
Write a letter of complaint and send it to the PCT and your MP and maybe even the SUN

I wonder how much they all cost? I know the Mirena coil costs £85 and I had to have 2 (one bent as they tried to get it in) :-S so I can't imagine you are more expensive than me!!

When I got my first one it was deemed so expensive that my Health Trust ( or whatever is was back that -the hospital as we used to know it) refused point blank to fund it and I had to go cap in hand begging my GP to prescribe it, He refused yet was more then happy to fund two or three day case surgery's a year:eek::eek:
I finally got a partner at the practice to prescribe but they refused to fit it so I had to go to boots for it then take it back to the hospital and ask my gynae to fit it before clinics started :eek:

At the end of the day I guess we should just be thankful that BC is still free. Imagine the poor Americans and Canadians - no subsidised medication there

I was told the best thing to get was the implant. IT WAS NOT!! They seem to push it on everyone! I still had to take the contraceptive pill with it, to stop the constant bleeding. It took them AGES to remove it aswell, told me I hadn't given it enough time to settle (yes 9months totally isn't long enough!)

They gave me microgynon (sp!) and it made my eyes intolerant to my contact lens, so I asked for another and they gave me Ovranette, which is the same pill!! I looked online, it's exactly the same ingrediants and whatnot. So that didn't help!

Currently on dianette which was a pain to get prescribed as the implant gave me V bad acne....Grrrr. They are now wanting me to get the injection, no thanks, I saw how my body reacted to the implant, I don't want something in me I can't stop straight away.
  • i'm on yasmin after trying pretty much everything else. have never had a problem with getting it perscribed though.... although sometimes where i used to live the chemist sometimes struggled to have it in stock. i wouldn't want to try anything else after bad reactions to other pills and i would be contacting someone in the PCT about this!

(as it goes, i wouldn't object to paying for the prescription for the pill - once every 6 months would be fine. however, telling me it was too expensive when it's a medication i'm used to would really upset me - i know how hard it can be to find a pill that suits me and i couldn't face spending the next 18 months trying a different one every 3 months!)

That's disgraceful. The worst I've ever had is my GP pointing out the difference in price between what I was originally on (Microgynon) and Yasmin, presumably thinking it would put me off. Microgynon gave me horrendous mood swings and Yasmin was recommended to me by friends. I haven't had any problems since changing.

I now see the Sister, who can sign prescriptions for contraceptive pills, and is a lot nicer than some of the male GPs I've seen. I always struggle to get an appointment too but when I explain over the phone the Sister is always willing to sign my prescription without seeing me and arrange a proper appointment next time I need some.

Unfortunately there are a lot of arrogant GPs out there and next time you go, I would insist on seeing someone else. I generally find these GPs have a lot of unhappy patients and if that's the case it might be worth making a formal complaint.

Op, why dont you try to get a lady doctor in your surgery, and if it is possbile a young one! I went in last week and they offered me an appoinment with the new doctor, and it is weird to say this, i love her !! she is great, fitted in my coil with no problems... and gave me all the information i need. ( i asked for the coil, she phoned the chemist so would have it ready for next day, in the day i was nervious and she suggested to wait if i feel like it, or talk about getting something different ? I am so happy with my copper coil, no more hormones for me.)

I think you just need to go back and calmly put forward your case for staying on Yasmin.

Doctors are under huge pressure to change people to cheaper medication. My mum works in a medical centre and inspectors go along every now and again and go through the prescription records and pick up on any prescriptions for expensive medication. The doctors are then put under huge pressure to move these people onto cheaper medication. My mum says that if people go along and have good reasons for wanting to stay on the expensive brand the doctors will switch them back.

I'm currently pregnant but have been taking yasmin for a few years now, have tried many other pills and would end up with heavy painful periods, headaches and terrible skin. I really hope i don't have a problem getting it again when i have my baby in february, after years of trying different pills i finally found something that worked, i shall certainly be kicking up a fuss if they won't prescribe it for free. Is there the option to pay for it if the doctors won't budge?
