Change the switches, thats probably the cause.
  • I think you should change the switches too.

When was the last time you had the electrics in your house inspected? Because if its been a while it might be work getting someone to have a look, It would find any underlying reasons and just in general its good to have your wiring inspected every 5 - 10 years.

it was re-wired before we moved in, 5 years ago
  • this may well be me being stupid, but why would both switches need changing at the same time...? I don't understand why both switches crackle at once - it doesn't seem logical that they's both fail at exactly the same time... iyswim

They shouldn't. I would try taking out the bulbs one at a time as suggested above and if that fails then replace one switch. If that doesn't cure it then use the switch you removed to replace the other one. If that fails then you could try replacing the second switch with a new one but at this point I'd be thinking about getting in a electrician.

I would say if you change the switches go for a decent make like MK, it is tried and tested stuff, not cheap ! but its probably cheap contract stuff you have in now by the sounds of it
You may click thanks if you found my advice useful
  • Beaten to it, just fit MK products.
