Bathroom extractor fan

I have just discovered that our recently refurbished bathroom has an extractor fan that vents straight into the loft. Now I assume this is totally inappropriate, but it would be really useful if someone could point be directly to something official that confirms this as I haven't managed to locate anything yet.

Any help much appreciated.

Could you put a ducting on the fan to outside.

Don't know of anything i can link you too (it's just common sense) but the ventilation needs to be to outside of the property else your merely shifting condensation problems to the loft where obviously the air is much cooler and so steamy air from the bathroom is more likely to cause even bigger condensation probs than it being in your bathroom!
Options are either to duct straight up through the roof with suitable cowl and replacing a tile or two with suitable lead flashing to keep weathertight or to to duct it via flexible ducting out via the soffits. Through the soffits is the easier option. You should be able to get a suitable kit or ducting parts from any diy store (try wickes) or somewhere like screwfix. Electrical wholesalers like TLC, QVS also sell the parts.

If you had someone fit this extractor i would get them back though as it's not acceptable to leave it as is.

& if it had building regs PASSED, complain to the inspector, 'cos they've not checked it properly!

  • Hi retireby50,
andrewb is quite correct in what he says,
basically the installation as it stands is obviously incorrect and left unchecked could cause major problems within the roof space, I suggest that you don't use the extractor till it's sorted.
as for something official, the building regs
    check out www.vent-axia.com/legislation/building-regulations
alternatively see what make the extractor is and have a look on their website

    hope this helps
