Littlewoods Catalogue (again)

I am an agent for Littlewoods.com and a customer purchased and ipod touch 8gb in July this year. It has now failed to work (the backlight has failed). I contacted littlewoods who told me to take it into a local computer store who specializes in apple. I did this and they agreed to swap it for a new one but it would take 5 days. I left it there but the next day they phoned to say "we have found a mark on it and Apple wouldn't accept it as a straight swap so can we collect it"
I contacted Littlewoods and told them this, they rang Apple and then phoned me back saying that Apple would swap it for a fee of £86.13 for a new case?
I declined on behalf of the customer. I argued with the caller from Littlewoods that under the sale of goods act, shouldn't the ipod be fit for the purpose it was bought - whilst he agreed, he said thats all Littlewoods can offer as the case is damaged.
Now excuse me, but if an item such as this is used every day, wont it get marked? The customer uses it at work and knew about this mark/dent whatever (it must be small because they didnt see it when the fiorst swap was agreed) but the customer admits it is marked.
So, who IS responsible for doing something - is iot Littlewoods or is it Apple - meanwhile, Littlewoods are expecting me to collect payments for the ipod monthly and the customer to pay when the ipod is faulty!!
Some time ago (listed here in the depths of time) I had cause to contact by mail, each of the top brass at Littlewoods (index section) who said I owedfor a computer I never purchased, they even accused me of receiving it when I had not - I did so and won - also received an apology and a small payment for my trouble when they were able to prove I had NEVER received it as it was cancelled.
