Boiler

Bit of a strange question I know!
We have a boiler at the top of our stairs in a cupboard, the flue goes up and out of the roof but has a big hole where it goes through the ceiling of the cupboard.
The copper pipe that goes from the boiler goes through the bathroom and out of the wall. The only problem is the pipe cant be seen outside, so its obviously not long enough. There was a guy came out to check and he said he cant see it but its not dangerous to us though Im not sure if that is right?
Now, the smell.. it is at the top of the stairs 90% of the day. It mostly smells like cigarette ash which is also the smell in the loft but we do not smoke and havent had anyone smoke in the house for over a year. Could this smell be coming from the boiler or is there just a bag of ash in the loft ? lol.
Our boiler is: Potterton Promax Combi 28 HE Plus.
If anyone can answer this it would be great because its driving me mad!:o
Thanks

Is the pipe you are talking about the excess pressure discharge pipe?

There was a guy came out to check and he said
"A guy?" What guy? Did you call him? Your LL? The council?

Was he Gassafe registered? If you don't know, why didn't you check before letting him loose?
If yes, you have nothing to worry about.
If not, get a Gasafe engineer out to answer your questions.

    Simple.

    .

Not strictly true, I know a couple of registered plumbers who I wouldn't let connect a hosepipe.

It was someone my housing association sent. There were a couple of guys sent since the first couldnt find the copper pipe going outside so he said someone else needed to come and look though that guy said its not dangerous, but Im not really sure. Surely if its supposed to go outside and its not then something is wrong?

Many copper pipes leave the boiler.

Yes, it will drain into your brickwork.

Check with the HA that the 'guys' they sent were Gassafe registered?

chappers - fair point there are a few rogues who are registered, but they tend to be the ones trying to justify extra work for themselves. In this case they seem to be saying extra work is not needed.

Is there more than 1 copper pipe that needs to go outside?
Im a bit clueless with things like these!
Is it dangerous for the pipe not to go outside when its supposed to?
And could the smell be coming from the boiler or any part of it? Its quite strong tonight, can smell it in the bedroom :(
