Hi guys.
I am in the Market for a old Victorian fireplace for my bedroom. Been looking on eBay etc and fully restored I'm looking at couple of hundred. But old unrestored it's alot cheaper. Does anyone know whether it's easy to restore and cheap to do? Any advice appreciated.
Regards
Richard

Yeah it's easy. either wire brush and stripper..or get them shotblasted..then black them again or paint.
These people I found when I was looking... http://www.edwardianfires.co.uk/fireplaces/edwardian_cast_iron.htm among many similar places ..the hearth seems to be the hard bit to buy cheaply.
I got a full set, iron insert, mantle and marble hearth (split as they need to be for soild fuels) for 190 off ebay in the end using this http://www.localbargainfinder.co.uk/
I just wish I'd bought a hob grate...then I could have a kettle on it

Alternatively you could buy a reproduction surround?
These are the best manufacturers in the UK of reproduction wooden surrounds.

Hope that might help.0 -
you can diy but its very hard messy work. a proper restorer will use a sand blaster. not really a diy operation.
sandblasting leaves a great base for the final finish.Get some gorm.0 -
