When so many people who want more than anything to work aren't choosen for those jobs?!
1) I would rather spend my life standing up for myself, not be a complete walkover, and hope to eventually find an employer that appreciates me for having backbone, and not being a spineless butt muncher.
2) Probably because they can't spell "chosen".Success and failure is determined by effort.0 -

No, that is just ridiculous. It is the company's problem if the phones go down. I would expect them to find me duties in the realm of my job description to do for an hour.Success and failure is determined by effort.0 -
I have read this thread open-mouthed with amazement that anyone in this day and age, recession or not, would be petty enough to make a fuss over a single hour's unpaid work-related travel.
What's "bad management" about it? You've been told what the plan is and how you will be transported and fed, with presumably enough notice to make arrangements if you have to re-schedule anything that you might have planned to do during that hour.
I left work 7 years ago on £15K salary (probably equiv. about £20K now), so I was not in the upper echelons by any means. However I couldn't begin to count the Saturday mornings I went in unpaid to cover peak periods, and I rarely left my desk at lunchtimes, maybe once a month to pop into town.
And yes, I was well thought of, unlike the jobsworth I sat next to, who everyone dreaded getting allocated to their team.
Work shouldn't be a "them and us" environment. You are all in it for the same reason after all.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

If I knew you could kick up a fuss about unpaid work related travel, I'd have complained about the 23hr journey to San Diego.0

I find it amusing that the OP is contemplating kicking up a major fuss (over sweet FA BTW) just prior to a meeting where it sounds rather likely the top brass will be announcing mass redundancies.....
Is there a sort of 'Darwin awards' for the workplace? If so I think I have a candidate!
PGo round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0 -

Me too! In these times when so many people are out of work too!
But I'm thinking the OP is very young and so has that 'school rules', can't see past the nose on her face frame of mind so it's kind of understandable and most of us start off that way before we see how the real world is. She's got time to grow out of it - and she must grow out of it or limit her aspirations because that's dead-end job mentality and won't get you anywhere in life.
Most of all, I'm actually embarrassed that people from overseas will read this thread and think all those cliches they've heard about British workers are true!0 -
I have always lived by putting effort into everything I do, which is why I don't expect to be taken for a ride by an employer (in this case, literally).
I wouldn't want to work for you if you classify employees who question their employer's motives as 'workshy !!!!!!'.
What about if the OP had a set of Yoga classes set up during her lunch hour or had a regular appointment which she couldn't attend which would be financially detrimental to her?
It is obvious the management have thought "well, they'll moan because it's their munch hour" and tried to get out of not paying their employees by providing a few scabby factory made sandwiches.
This thread would have never existed if the employer did in the first place what was right and proper, and legal.Success and failure is determined by effort.0 -

This is just too funny!:rotfl:
I obviously live in a completely different world to some of you!0 -
So if I asked you to go to Barbados for a week on a business trip. You wouldn't go unless you could travel there, do your work and return between your contracted working hours. The last guy I sent there was working for 4 days from 7am until 7pm. Am I abusing him? or is he just happy to do a job, get well paid, keep our client happy and retain their business because we do the best we possibly can for them?
If you got 24 hours notice that you had to do a presentation for a client you'd stop working on it once your contracted day was over?
Is all that too much for you moneysavingexpert79?0 -
