We used to have to go to "speeches" only they were called conferences, were often at the other end of the country, and we had to stay overnight in shared hotel rooms.

Funny that no-one (as far as I can remember) treated them as anything other than a perk - a trip out from the office routine, with a chance to feel like we really belonged to something. The hotel stay and evening dinner/ free breakfasts were much appreciated too.

    How times change...

Absolutly! We have a conference every few years for our clients. They love it! it's a perk and they sweettalk, charm or even beg their bosses to come! they get drunk, fed and entertained! they also learn a lot from us and each other! it's a perk, not a hardship!

i'm off to Cannes for 3 days next week for a mapping conference. Should I get my union involved!!!! :rotfl:

As mentioned; this employer pays for a 20 minute break every day, for the OP. Terrible behaviour.

We're talking about an hour's unpaid break. Unpaid - so the OP can do what they like, not what their employer dictates.
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?
  • Blimey! Just go. This is your employer not your enemy. It's a small potion of your day to find out about something that might effect your whole life if it is redundancies and perhaps relocation as your company is merging.

Either way wouldn't you like to hear first hand? And if they are just 'bragging' don't you want to celebrate too? You're part of the success and you have a job with them because of the success.

Plus is sounds like an easy day to me!!

Absolutly, however if they don't do it then they won't get promoted, they won't get pay rises and if there are redudancies then they're not doing themselves any favours.

But why can't the big wigs go to the staff, then? Why uproot everyone?

    So? Do I sound bovverred?

Perhaps there isn't substantial space to house everyone.

We're taken off site every month for catch up meetings and I'm happy to go. I want to know my employer is doing well and my job is relatively safe.

This 'us' and 'them' attitude isn't at all helpful.
  • So? Do I sound bovverred?

maybe not. But that's why i look down on working class scum like you!
  • The trouble is, it is people like you that are willing to work for nothing that allows employers to walk all over people and makes life harder for others.

working in the nhs, you do what is in the best interest of the patient, and sometimes this may involve giving up a lunch hour to improve knowledge and/or skills which will improve patient care - not everything is learnt by going on a specific course.

It is usually within management that this attitude originates.
