Moral fibre? :rotfl: I'd call it bloody mindedness. It was rife in the bad old days of miners strikes etc.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

This thread is getting funnier by the minute.
OP - dont think of this venture as not getting your lunch break..you are going to hear some higher management speak about something that may or may not have an impact on your future. Your employer cares enough to provide transport to and from the venue and provide lunch..you would have more to complain about if they expected you to get there and back under your own steam and buy your own lunch! Sometimes, it pays to be flexible - its only an hour and certainly not a week. If I was in your situation I would think "great no more whining customers, no phones ringing for a few hours, I can get away from the office for a bit" I wouldnt be running to the union to raise a grievance. The employer is likely to have spoken to the union in the first place which is why a coach has been provided as well as lunch.
MSE79 - you are certainly deluded..as Zazen has explained HR are there to protect the company from litigation by having procedures for health & safety, employment, etc. etc.
I am now self employed and work all kinds of strange hours..I am not going to put the phone down on someone if they ring me up at 10pm because it is out of working hours..life isnt like that. I am not a prostitute either - I work in event management and am a publicist/manager of a rock band.:D0 -

Sarcasm is the lowest form of humour.
The fact that I got a bursary to do the masters course and a high probability of getting a 'professional' career after it, enticed me more than anything. However I would have chosen something else if I knew the reality. Saying that, employers since then seem to think it is a good qualification to have.Success and failure is determined by effort.0 -

Have you ever worked in HR? No-one who seems to think they know what HR is about has mentioned anything about recruitment or absence management - unless you're a HR manager you're unlikely to get involved in policy making.
Self employed? You work hours that suit you. Your 'job' as a publicist/manager of some crappy student rock band that will never make it doesn't qualify as a job.Success and failure is determined by effort.0 -

I know all about HR because I was branch secretary of Unison for 4 years..I think that qualifies me to know all about HR Departments and how they work..I made sure that I was extremely well-versed in the employer's procedures otherwise how could I represent my members so well? I am actually wondering if you work in HR for the civil service as they are very good at covering their own backsides should things go pearshaped.
As for crappy student rock band..they are not students but professional people and for your information they are making it..their music is used around the world by Harley Davidson. I also have a first class honours degree in event management.
Don't you look down your nose at me because I am self employed - self employment is harder than being employed by someone else..I have to know about tax, NI, insurances, fees, VAT, health & safety, the buck stops with me..I have the responsibility that an employer would have and not an employee.
I have no idea why I am justifying myself to you because you are nothing but a troll:p0 -

Oh my life - you're brilliant. You didn't know the WTR rules and yet we only 'seem to think' we know about HR.
Seriously; you advise people quite happily but don't seem to realise that if they follow through with your advice it could end up costing them dear.
It's not our fault you didn't know the remit of HR; and although now you are not working in HR - you are still happy to misguide people and get all ranty when people put you right on some facts.0 -

How have I misguided anyone? I would do exactly everything I have said on this post. The one post I have been corrected on I have acknowledged that I was incorrect and moved on.
Back to the original post - she is perfectly entitled to feel aggrieved. Personally, I would go sick for the day. Avoid all problems then. Whatever they have to say in this speech can be put in an email.Success and failure is determined by effort.0
