Can I use old Douwe Egberts Coffee Jars to store mincemeat?

Hi

I have a load of Jam jars for my mincemeat but not enough. I have a few of the Douwe Egberts style coffee Jars with the plastic bit round the lid.

I am about to put them in the oven to sterilise but I am not sure if the lids off the coffee ones will melt.

Any ideas?

  • Put them through the dishwasher on a hot cycle? Or try sterilising them with boiling water?

  • Thanks will try that next time. I put the lid into the oven with the other jam jars and it... well... kind of... shriveled up:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Guess I'll know not to do that next time. Luckily I did have a spare jar so I am going to put that lid through the dishwasher now...

My only other drama is that now I can not find my waxed discs. I bought 200 of them last Christmas and only used about 10!

Its kind of a weird feeling - sitting in my lounge in Wootton Bassett right now knowing that other people across the UK are sitting down too looking at MSE trying to help silly people like me who stick plastic into an oven and wonder why it shrinks! - Seriously though it is pretty cool that there are people out there right now doing similar things to me

    Thanks for your reply
  • Bit like shrinky dinks then! As a rule putting plastics in the oven is a Bad Idea as some (eg pvc) can release toxic fumes. I recently stank the house out when I missed a clear plastic label on a jar. For next time use milton - dishwasher works ok but some modern dishwashers (like mine) don't get that hot accoring to the manual so not sure I would risk it for something like mince meat which doesn't have quite as much sugar (or vinegar) as other preserves.

If you cant find waxed disks, use greaseproof paper dipped in brandy then put another glug of brandy on top before sealing it shut. I did this with my mincemeat last year and still have a jar left thats in tip-top condition
  • I put my glass jars with a little water in the microwave on high for 2 mins to sterilize.
I've got my fruit and spices sitting in a bowl atm. Added loads of exotic fruits in this year, as I'm a bit bored of the usual mincemeat. Basing it on Delia's recipe this year.

Brilliant - I can not find them so I shall definitely give this a go! Fantastic. Thanks very much I just know that when I've bought some new ones I will find the old ones!
