Just shop around for decent branded gear. The subject has been beaten into submission on the forum here..use the search function :) Tradesmen don't generally have the time to shop around chasing the best deals and tend to stick to their preferred sources for convenience..not just that they get a decent service and can stop and catch-up with their plumbing mates ("i'm just off to pick up your parts Mr B"..3 hours later...!)! You can nearly always guarantee that no single one place is ever the cheapest for everything you need. So use your recommendations, shop around and play them all off against each other.

Another point is many of us don't actually have suitable sized vehicles to collect a bathroom suite..although some plumbers merchants do offer delivery services it always comes at a higher cost than many of the online retailers who charge well below what delivery actually costs them. I think this is something that tradesmen who are used to picking up bathroom suites often forget! For the lesser able-bodied person delivery is a must!
So always compare prices including delivery if delivery is what you need!

Don't buy online. Recipe for disaster to save a couple of quid. Delivery can be problematic, quality control poor and if anything goes wrong you wait around for ages waiting for them to sort it out.
whilst i agree to you to a point, not all online retailers are the same and i certainly wouldn't overlook this option entirely. Although i purchased most of my branded bathroom gear online on the whole it was a good experience (the one place that i had ALL my problems with was screwfix - my local parcel force man knows me purely for screwfix returns!). Some are actually good and some will save you much more than a couple of quid - follow recommendations given on the forum.
Always check their returns policies and always ensure you order in plenty of time so your gear is ready for any tradesmen. Check everything too rather than leaving it to your plumber to find obvious faults. So long as you buy branded gear there's no reason quality should be compromised. A twyford toilet bought online is identical to one bought in your plumbers merchants (in my case the one bought online came from a local plumbers merchant so an argument of lesser quality falls down completely..plus it cost me less in delivery than if i went to the plumber merchant direct!)

    Good luck with your bathroom

I said it in a few other posts but when we went to the plumbers' merchants, already picked the suite and asked if they could beat the internet price (with delivery).

They did for everything, even though it was from 2/3 different internet stores
