referee question

Hey, i'm going to look at a flat tomorrow in a new development and was hoping someone could answer some of my questions.

The flat I am looking at is through William H Brown and if I decide to take it then they have to get a reference from my employer. Is this just a formality to make sure I will be able to pay rent? The thing is, I am starting a new job next monday and feel odd and rude asking for my new manager to give me a reference when we have not even met yet. If it is just to confirm that I will be working then I am sure she will not mind but I will phone to ask her permission just in case. But if it is to say what kind of person I am, then do u think they could get a reference from my previous employer?

Also, on the sheet that has all the details about what is in each room etc, it mentions tv points but not telephone points. Do u reckon that despite this it will have a telephone point as this would be unusual?

Thanks

Employer references are usually quite simple affairs to verify the person actually has the job that they claim and confirm their earnings. I believe your agency would prefer the current employer, therefore you should check this with them and then ask the current employer who is probably fairly used to confirming the status of their employees to agents.

Make no assumptions whatsoever about the telephone point so check with the agency as a tenant is likely to be liable for any installation charge (if a socket isn't present) or connection charge (if the telephone lines not recently been in use).
