will they taste the same?????

i went to asda last week to buy some tins of quality street on special offer, which were 2 for £7, so effectively £3.50 a tin. they had all the popular varieties and trade was brisk, everyone wanting a bargain. then this morning while having a chat and a coffee with my mum i was flicking through one of the many dozens of magazines pushed through my door this time of year. was not really paying much attention till a tin of quality street caught my eye, i had got to the hamper section and could not believe my eyes when i realised for the same size of tin and make of chocolate they were asking for £14, yes £14 i read it out or should i say splutter and my mum said maybe its because they are offering finance on it, that always bumps it up a bit. i disagreed with her but checked and was horrified to find that yes, they did offer finance on it if you did not wish to pay for it straight away. so you could end up paying 39.9% APR on a tin of chocolates that were already costing over the odds. i cannot believe that such a large amount of money is still being made from such a small item. i thought i had little until i read this, at least i can afford to take advantage of what is being offered to cash buyers. but it is disgusting in this day and age that companies are being allowed to get away with charged like this, do they sleep at night...? and does it taste the same...?

No if I had over paid £10.50 for a tin of chocs it would leave a bitter taste;)

I dont know how hamper companies are still going to be honest.

All the goods in these hampers are top prices. I think the same as you that they are preying on the less well off.

Mind you a couple of years ago tins of Roses, heroes etc were in fact in supermarkets nearer the £8/9 mark.

They have these offers to get people into the supermarkets to buy other things,

At the moment they are in Morrisons at £3.99 each
Coop, last week they were 2 for £8.00 this week they are 2 for £10

I'm off to Morrisons for mine tomorrow, i just missed out on the Asda ones,, they had sold out when i got there.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the Morrison's offer ended today, it was just a 4 day special. I hope someone else has a good offer for you soon.

I've just been to Morrisons and they had loads of Quality Street and Roses left but no Heroes

Loads of good deals around at the mo, I don't feel so bad if I miss one, another one will be along soon!!

PS the other problem with food hampers is that they always seem to have loads of things in them that I don't like.

That is a dreadful price, and very very wrong! Like the OP I too am glad that I have enough money to take advantage of offers when they appear, if I didn't take advantage then we simply wouldn't have the items, as I wouldn't dream of buying these overpriced hampers.

We had homemade hampers when we were kids - my mum and dad used to fill up cardboard boxes in the weeks running up to Christmas with whatever treats they found and thought we'd enjoy! Much cheaper and guaranteed we only got stuff we liked!

Though I was always amazed at a friend of mine, her Christmas used to arrive each year in a green Harrods van! Quite impressive watching the men put up the tree and all the bits and carry the vast amounts of food and drink indoors! Somehow I was always glad that my parents chose my pressies for me and didn't just get someone else to order over the phone though.

Supermarkets know then when they 'tempt' you in with cheap Christmas goods you will exit the store with more then you went in for . Plus how many people buy the chocolates early , eat them , then go in for more lol .

Why do people go mad at this time of year anyway? what is it with Christmas and buying so much food

Yep , almost ate mine, but the tins at 3.99 are better value than a bar of chocolate.

Supermarkets are always running loss leader offers like this. There's always a price war on some of the most popular items as well. It's to lure you to shop in their store. I know myself that if I go to a specific supermarket to buy their dirt cheap special deal of the week I'll probably pick up some other shopping while there. And sometimes I'll think "Hey, not a bad shop, I'll come here more often." The big supermarkets are always trying to poach each other's store-loyal customers. (Of which I am not one, have to say.)
