How much are my shares worth?

Hi

I've been fortunate to have had some shares transferred to me.

I've never had shares before so have a newbie question.

I want to find out how much the shares are worth in total and I'm not sure I'm working out the value correctly so would appreciate some help.

The share certificate says 640 ordinary shares of €0.10 each (that's Euro)

The current share value is 430.0p (GBP)

Can anyone tell me what they're worth based on these figures?

I'm not sure if its 640 x 411p or 64 x 411p. Or do I need to convert from Euro to GBP in which case approx 570 x 411p or 57 x 411p?

You can see why I'm confused.:o

Thanks for your time.

The €0.10 is a nominal value on the share certificate and isn't part of the current market value.

I would say that the value is 640 x 430p = £2,752. There will be dealing costs involved in selling them.

Where did 411p come from? Or 57? Now you're confusing the planet.

Better still, name the company. Then people can check out the share price for themselves!

EDIT: Just see that you've named the company as Dragon Oil. The BBC business pages show that the shares can be traded on the London Stock Exchange and are currently valued at 432p. I would ignore any reference to Euros and exchange rates unless you are currently outside the UK.

I also note that they are currently 3 times their value a year ago. So it's a volatile stock that is probably higher risk / higher potential than a typical blue-chip company.

If they are quoted at 430p then they are worth 640x430p = £2752
  • Agree with the above. I think you have divided the number of shares by 10 because of the 0.10 Euro nominal value.

I think the £4.11 was a change in share price from £4.30.

    Now worth £4.32 so 640 x £4.32 = £2,764.80

    =============

Thanks to you all for replying so quickly and clearing up my confusion.

Yes you're exactly right, I had divided them by 10 because of the 0.10 and the share price has gone up since the last time I looked.

So now I know they're not worth £27k+ I'll have to cancel that new car I ordered  - only kidding!

Very relieved its not £270 and based on DGO's trend I think I'll hang on to them for a bit.

Thanks again to you all for replying so quickly.

    Mucho appreciated.

    Cautionary tale.

When I met my MiL 12 years ago, she had shares in BT. They were worth <£3 per share. A few years later they were up to ~£10. They're now at £1.40.

Pretty-much the same with Standard Chartered.

If you don't know what you're doing, then you are gambling.

There is a takeover bid from Emirates National Oil Company. The situation is ongoing but a few large shareholders have rejected the bid - http://www.reuters.com/article/innovationNews/idUSTRE5AF1WR20091116
  • I'd be tempted to sell these and pocket a nice bit of bunce - straight into my ISA.
