If you are happy with the origin and contents of the PC (or don't have the disks), then personally I would create a new admin user of the name you want, copy anything you need from the old to new user, then delete or disable the old user.
Changing the current username would be messy.
How do I go about doing that?

Thanks tanglefoot - I know how to create a new account, it's the copying everything from the old user to the new user that I'm unsure of.

    Need to do what?

I don't need to do anything - the computer is working perfectly as it is, but I just wanted to replace all references to the previous owner with my details - I'm egotistical like that! :D
  • Internet Explorer Favorites:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Favorites

    Outlook Express Email:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

    Windows Address Book:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

Almost everything else should be in your My Documents folder, but if you've installed any third-party software there may be other things in your profile folder I haven't accounted for.

This might be of some use to you too.

That is partly why I suggested a new user, as you don't inherit all their settings

Oh right thanks - so if I set up a new user account, then make sure I've got all the programs etc that I want, I can just delete the old account?
