Internal or External Slave HDD?

I'm considering installing a second HDD in my desktop pc, for use as a backup facility. Out of interest, what are the pros and cons regarding using internal and external units please? I know the spec. I need for an internal unit, but what would be the "important numbers" to look for when choosing an external unit, to ensure compatibility with my pc? Thanks.

Most external drives will be USB which shouldn't have a problem working with most modern computers.
An external drive is handy in the sense that it's easy to unhook, you can take it places etc...
It does however require it's own power cable, and sits out of the case so causes more clutter. An internal drive runs via the power supply in the case, and isn't noticeable as it's sat in the case. Internal drives are usually slightly faster too, although it's nothing hugely different.
If you want something mobile go for an external. If you don't need mobility and want less clutter, go for an internal."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
I use a 150gb external HD, western digital, for images.
Yes usb 2, windows drivers unless you run 98se.
Seem to work fine.0 -
Unless you're going to move it between machines, I'd get an internal drive. I have two Lacie drives on my PC at the moment for videos I'm editing for other people: it's convenient for them as all their footage is stored on those drives and they can take them away when the editing is done, but it means two more power supplies to plug into extension leads and two more things to remember to switch on and off. Also, as mentioned, internal drives will be a bit faster.0
